Fixed Deposits (FDs) can be a good option for elderly people who wish to safely place their savings and receive regular income. In November 2026, several banks adjusted the interest rates on FDs. Some smaller financial banks offer senior citizens a rate of up to 8.60%, while large private and state-owned banks offer a maximum rate in the range of 7.10% to 7.55%.
In November 2026, Suryodaya Small Finance Bank offers the highest rate for senior citizens—up to 8.60%. This is followed by Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, which offers up to 8.50%. Regarding larger banks, Kotak Mahindra Bank offers up to 7.55%, and Axis Bank offers up to 7.35%. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank set the maximum rate at 7.20%, while the state-owned bank PNB offers a rate of up to 7.10%.
HDFC Bank changed its FD interest rates starting November 4, 2026, increasing the rates for certain term deposits by 50 basis points (0.50%). Additionally, ICICI Bank, PNB, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, and some small financial banks have also made changes to their rates.
If an elderly person places an FD of 500,000 rupees, they will receive about 43,000 rupees in income per year at a rate of 8.60%. At a rate of 7.20%, the same amount will yield about 36,000 rupees annually, which is a difference of 7,000 rupees per year.
When depositing 10 million rupees in an FD, a rate of 8.60% will provide an income of about 86,000 rupees per year. At a rate of 7.20%, this amount will be approximately 72,000 rupees. Thus, placing funds in a bank with a higher rate can bring an additional benefit of 14,000 rupees annually.
HDFC Bank offers senior citizens a rate of 7.20% on FDs ranging from 3 years and 1 day to 5 years. ICICI Bank also offers 7.20% for terms from 3 years and 1 day to 5 years, including a five-year deposit with bank tax benefits.
Punjab National Bank (PNB) offers senior citizens a maximum rate of 7.10% under a special 444-day FD scheme. To find out the exact term for the FD with the highest rate at Suryodaya, Utkarsh, Kotak Mahindra, and Axis Bank, one must consult their latest interest rate lists.
Although a high FD interest rate is a positive aspect, it is also important to consider investment security. According to the rules of the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), the maximum insured amount for a qualified deposit by one depositor in one bank is 500,000 rupees, including both the principal amount and interest. If you deposit more than 500,000 rupees in one bank, it is worth considering distributing the funds among different insured banks. Before opening an FD, you should also study the penalties for early withdrawal, the method of earning interest, and the taxes applied to the interest.
