Ravi Shastri expresses disappointment over Mohammad Shammi's exit from Test cricket and questions player selection process

After Mohammad Shammi announced his departure from Test cricket, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri criticized the team selection procedure. He believes that the experienced fast bowler should have been given another chance in Test format matches.

During the 'Additional Matches' program before the second ODI against New Zealand on Sunday, Shastri noted: 'It is sad that a player who performed so well for the country had to leave this way. I thought he still had the potential to take another 30-40 wickets. He should have played for the last 12 months, and perhaps he should have made it into the national team for Test level matches.'

Mohammad Shammi faced constant injuries after the 2023 Cricket World Cup. In February 2024, he underwent ankle surgery, and his condition was then complicated by knee problems. Due to these issues, he could not participate in the five-match series against Australia.

Previously, when he was not selected for the tour to England in 2025, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Mohammad Shammi's workload was insufficient for a demanding five-match series. Furthermore, the medical team did not recommend his inclusion.

To this, Ravi Shastri responded, stating: 'What good is such physical fitness if the player is fit in the dressing room but cannot bowl 10 or 12 overs in a match? You have a bowler who consistently bowls overs. Therefore, I am disappointed that he was not given another chance.'

Despite his absence from the national team, Mohammad Shammi regularly participated in home matches for Bengal. In the 2026-27 Dilip Trophy, he took seven wickets in three matches for the Eastern Region team, contributing to the title win. In the first three matches of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, he had 14 wickets at an average of 14. He demonstrated 5/59 against Delhi and 4/37 against Maharashtra. Mohammad Shastri cited this data, noting that Shammi played in every match for Bengal and bowled 15-20 overs. In his opinion, there is no better criterion for assessing a sportsman's form than this.

Even after announcing his exit from Test cricket, Mohammad Shammi's career will continue. He intends to play in ODIs and T20s and may try to secure a spot in the Indian team for the 2027 Cricket World Cup. Mohammad Shammi's last match for India was in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, where he took nine wickets in five matches and was one of India's most successful bowlers alongside Varun Chakravarthy.

Bowling coach Marne Morrell expresses emotions over Mohammad Shammi's exit from tests, recalling time spent together

After Mohammad Shammi announced his departure from Test matches, India's bowling coach Marne Morrell shared his feelings. The former fast bowler from South India recalled the time spent with Shammi, noting that Shammi provided him with significant help during his initial days in the Indian dressing room. He played an important role in understanding the team's style and atmosphere.

Marne Morrell joined the Indian team's coaching staff in 2024 as part of Gautam Gambhir's coaching setup. Although he did not have the opportunity to work with Mohammad Shammi in Test matches, they spent some time together during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This tournament was Shammi's last in the Indian jersey.

In an interview with the broadcast channel Sony Sports, Marne Morrell stated: 'I was very lucky that when I started working with the team, Shammi was also part of the squad. He is an exceptionally skilled bowler and a wonderful person. He helped me greatly to understand the Indian atmosphere and language in the dressing room. I am sad to hear about his retirement.'

Morrell also emphasized that having such an experienced player as Shammi around the team was very beneficial. According to him, at the beginning of his career, Shammi helped him get acquainted with the working style of the Indian team.

Despite stepping away from Tests, Shammi will continue to play in limited-overs formats. He will feature for Bengal in home matches and in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Morrell is glad that Shammi continues to actively participate at the domestic level.

He added: 'He still bowls many overs at home, and it is good to watch.'

Mohammad Shammi took 462 wickets across all formats of his international career, including 229 in Tests and 206 in ODIs. His experience and bowling skills were long important to Indian cricket.

Ishan Kishan's return questions India's squad composition after bright victory over New Zealand

The Indian team faces a complex dilemma: how to integrate players in excellent form while accounting for the possible return of Ishan Kishan. The questions concern not only the on-field lineup but also the order of play and rotation policy.

In the third T20 match against New Zealand, the Indian team demonstrated powerful play, giving the opponents no chance. Abhishek Sharma scored 113 runs off 38 balls, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi showed his strength in the squad, allowing India to reach a target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs.

Thanks to this impressive victory, India gained an undisputed 3-0 lead in the five-match series. However, amidst this success, a difficult question has arisen: if Ishan Kishan recovers and returns to the team, whose place will be taken?

As soon as the wait for Ishan Kishan's return ends, the Indian team may face a selection problem. On one hand, there is Abhishek, capable of changing the course of the match with his explosive playing style. On the other hand, there is Vaibhav, who was fielded at the start in the third T20. Sanju Samson is also a key player who scores runs.

Deciding to drop Abhishek will be difficult given his recent performance. Dropping Vaibhav would call into question the plan to consistently give opportunities to the young batter at his preferred position. Excluding Sanju is also not easy, especially if he is strengthening his position by scoring runs.

The question of Ishan's return is also important. When the player becomes available after recovery, the team management must decide on his inclusion and the role of the other players. The real task is not just choosing one name, but creating a combination that maximizes the strengths of all players.

In the third T20, while Ishan was absent, Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a chance to bat at the top. This sparked a new discussion about the order of play. Vaibhav's main strength is attacking bowlers at the beginning of the innings. Previously, there were doubts about experimenting with his placement at the third position.

However, if the team plans to continue using Vaibhav at the start, it will have to reconsider the batting order of the remaining batsmen. In the third T20 against New Zealand, Sanju Samson batted at the third position. Now, if they maintain the plan with Vaibhav at the start, Sanju may be forced to adapt to a different role.

The situation is complicated by the question: should Sanju give up his preferred position for Vaibhav? Will the team management change the batting order to keep the Abhishek and Vaibhav duo? And will it become harder for Sanju to secure a spot in the squad after Ishan's return?

There is currently no definitive answer to these questions. Nevertheless, it is clear that one player's return may require a review of many aspects of the batting order.

The most important question in this situation relates to the Indian team's rotation policy. India has scheduled 16 T20 international matches from August to December: 3 against Afghanistan, 5 against West Indies, 5 against New Zealand, and 3 against Sri Lanka.

There could be a scenario where the team management predetermines how many matches each player will get, who will rest, and what each player's role will be. If players were informed in advance that they could take a break after four or five matches, the decision to exclude a player would not be based solely on their performance.

This could bring two advantages to the team. Firstly, it would reduce the pressure on key players who play constantly. Secondly, players' roles would remain clear during experiments with alternative squads.

Nevertheless, rotation does not mean that players must be excluded, even with good performance. Management must make decisions based on physical condition, form, opponent, and strategy. But having a preliminary plan could significantly simplify explaining any changes.

There are about two years until the T20 World Cup. This gives the Indian team time to test various batting order options, evaluate players in their roles, and make changes if necessary.

Therefore, the current selection crisis cannot be seen merely as losing a spot for one player. It is also an opportunity for the team management to develop a future strategy. Does India want to promote the Abhishek and Vaibhav duo at the top? What position will benefit Sanju the most? What will his role be after Ishan's return?
