Pope Leo XIV has commenced his journey through South America, starting in Montevideo. He stated that he is in 'very good shape' following an operation in October to treat lung cancer.
During a conversation with journalists aboard the papal plane before the start of the 12-day tour of South America, which begins in Uruguay, Leo XIV noted that he had not doubted the possibility of this trip. He expressed joy, saying: 'Thank God. Thanks to excellent medical care, I am here today, in very good shape, I suppose.'
The Pope is 71 years old. On October 13, he underwent surgery at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome to remove a tumor and part of his right lung. He was discharged from the hospital on October 17, and doctors mentioned by the Vatican confirmed that he is fit for travel and does not require further treatment.
When asked by a journalist for advice to people facing a cancer diagnosis, he replied: 'Do not be afraid.' He emphasized that early detection is the best solution, so regular medical check-ups are a real blessing, and advised taking care of oneself.
When asked about resuming tennis, one of his favorite sports, he responded that not yet, but intends to return to playing.
The 12-day papal trip also includes Argentina and Peru, where the Pope lived for 20 years as a missionary and Bishop of Chiclayo, and holds citizenship in that country in addition to US citizenship.
The Vatican reported that Leo XIV voted in the North American midterm elections on Tuesday, sending his ballot by mail to Chicago, where he was born. Robert Prewost is registered in the Illinois state voter registry because his permanent residence is registered in New Lenox—where his brother lives. Prewost voted in the general elections of 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2024, as well as in the Republican primaries of 2012, 2014, and 2016, and the Democratic primaries of 2008 and 2010.
The Pope's voting occurs in a year marked by clear disagreements between himself and U.S. President Donald Trump on issues such as immigration policy and the war against Iran. During the flight, he was asked about his commitment to voting, and Prewost stated that he is proud to be an American and to exercise his right to vote.
The first American Pope openly criticized the military operation launched by the US and Israel against the Islamic Republic on February 28, stating that no one can stop him from continuing to criticize the war. In turn, Trump claimed that Leo XIV 'endangers many Catholics and many people,' because, in his opinion, 'it would be good if Iran had nuclear weapons.'
