Powerhouse Parramatta Museum to Open in Sydney on November 7, 2026

The Powerhouse Parramatta, designed by Franco-Japanese architects Moreau Kusunoki in collaboration with the Australian firm Genton as local architect, is scheduled to open on November 7, 2026, in Sydney. According to the NSW Government, this project represents the largest cultural infrastructure initiative in Australia since the Sydney Opera House.

The project idea was first presented in 2019, with construction beginning in 2022. Although the opening was initially planned for 2025, the main building was completed at the beginning of this year, paving the way for the inauguration date in November 2026.

Powerhouse Parramatta integrates with Powerhouse, which is Australia's largest museum conglomerate, encompassing a network of cultural venues focused on art, design, science, and technology. The initial programming for the new space will include five exhibitions and a 23-day Opening Festival, featuring lectures, workshops, music, and performances related to the exhibition themes.

This project is the first state cultural establishment to be built in Western Sydney, an area experiencing one of Australia's fastest rates of growth. It is part of a broader urban development plan that includes the future Parramatta Station of Sydney Metro West, currently under construction, as well as surrounding urban design and adjacent developments.

This development plan encompasses four distinct structures: a 43-story build-to-rent residential tower with 470 apartments; a 29-story commercial tower; a 24-story building with 500 student accommodation units; and an eight-story hotel.

Despite the enthusiasm, the museum has faced financial and administrative scrutiny, as well as public criticism regarding the lack of community engagement opportunities, management changes, and the hiring of notable external consultants. Project proponents emphasize the cultural shift the institution will bring to Greater Parramatta and Western Sydney, recognized as one of the oldest European settlements in inland Australia and a relevant commercial hub.

The expected success also depends on the quality of the new facilities, which compare favorably to major global contemporary cultural centers. An investigation by The Guardian indicated that nearly 22,000 people registered for the opening events, half of whom were residents of Western Sydney.

The building features a ground-floor exhibition space measuring 18 meters high and approximately 2,000 square meters, making it one of the country's largest column-free spaces. This venue will host the 'Task Eternal' exhibition, which traces humanity's journey in the pursuit of flight and space conquest through four acts: Skyward, Power, Off-Earth, and The Return. This show, with exhibition design by OPEN Architecture, displays over 850 items, including a lunar rock provided by NASA and original sketches of flying machines by Leonardo da Vinci.

The second floor houses the Sir William Tyree Foundation Gallery, where visitors can see 'The Mall,' an exhibition created in collaboration with OMA*AMO, analyzing the social and cultural life of shopping centers through five architectural volumes: Arcade, Desire, Transaction, Ideal City, and Forum.

In the Neilson Foundation Gallery, 'The Dark' will be displayed, a proposal aimed at children to perceive darkness as an environment of fascination and adventure. On the third level, the Holdmark Gallery will present 'Overflow,' an exhibition led by First Nations peoples. This show is structured around seven community commissions made in partnership with Aboriginal-led organizations in New South Wales, and includes an installation by Tyrrell Studio.

Also on the third level, the exhibition 'Es Devlin: The Turning' will mark the British artist's debut in Australia.

In other parts of the world, the Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), Theatre Projects, and Nagata Acoustics, officially opened on October 17, 2026, on the banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China.

In Copenhagen, Denmark, the KAI Water Culture House, from the Kengo Kuma & Associates office, is scheduled to open on December 5, 2026, in Papirøen (Paper Island), combining cultural spaces with indoor and outdoor pools and wellness facilities.

In the United States, the expansion of the Colburn School campus in Los Angeles, spanning approximately 9,300 square meters and designed by Frank Gehry, will open on September 25, 2027. Finally, in the United Arab Emirates, the Sharjah Design Centre (SDC), a new entity dedicated to design, material research, prototyping, and production, announced plans for a new rammed-earth building with an opening scheduled for 2029.

Modern Art Museum in Niterói Opens Rooftop Access and Showcases New Perspective of Guanabara Bay

The Modern Art Museum of Niterói (MAC), located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, invites visitors to its rooftop starting this Saturday (November 7th). This activity is part of an installation titled 'Teto – De onde não se vê quando se está' (Rooftop – Where you cannot see when you are there), created by architect Pedro Varella. The installation allows visitors to observe Guanabara Bay from the height of the building designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The visit will last until November 22nd, the city's birthday celebration, and is part of the museum's 30th anniversary program.

MAC, known for its outstanding view of the Niterói waterfront, will be perceived from a new angle by those who ascend to the roof. From this vantage point, one can see the entrance to Guanabara Bay without including the building's structure itself in the frame. From above, the surface that appears concave from below begins to be perceived as convex.

Access is provided via a circular staircase installed on a section of the ramp leading to the exhibition level. Before the construction of the museum, which opened in 1996, Mirante da Boa Viagem was located on this site, facing the waters of the bay.

The installation was developed by the Gru.a bureau, co-founded by Varella, and was initially presented in 2017, when it received the 3rd Rinaldo Roelds Jr. Prize awarded in partnership between MAC and the Park Lage School of Visual Arts.

This year, visits will be conducted in groups of up to 15 people, lasting 15 minutes, with ten-minute breaks between ascents. Tickets will be issued directly at the museum after cash payment, at four set times: 9:30, 11:30, 13:30, and 15:30, in order of arrival. Advance booking is not available. The first ascent is scheduled for 10:00, and the last for 17:20.

The minimum age requirement for participation is 12 years old; minors under 16 must be supervised by a responsible adult. Activities may be suspended due to weather conditions and are not held on rainy or windy days.

In addition to the rooftop tours, the museum is hosting four anniversary exhibitions. In the Central Hall, MAC Monumental displays about 130 large-scale works from the MAC Niterói and Juan Sattamini collections. In MAC Panorama, located on the mezzanine, the history of the museum is told through works from its collection, including pieces by artists such as Adriana Varejão, Flávio Shiró, Victor Arruda, and Marcia H.

For the young audience, MAC para crianças offers activities designed to help children approach art through drawing and games. The program also includes the Sentir pra ver exhibition, a multi-sensory display using models and audio descriptions to enhance accessibility to the artworks.

Time Space Existence 2027 Exhibition will address architecture in the face of change

The Time Space Existence architecture biennial is returning for its eighth edition, gathering over 200 participants. This group includes everything from world-renowned architectural firms to novice studios and higher education institutions.

The participants' works will be displayed in three historic locations in Venice: Palazzo Mora, Palazzo Bembo, and Giardini della Marinaressa. The curatorial team is currently finalizing the list of participants, and several names have already been confirmed.

Maintaining the thematic line of the previous edition, which focused on themes such as Repair, Regeneration, and Reuse, the 2027 edition will dedicate itself to investigating architecture as an approach that embraces transformations rather than opposing them. The focus will be on the intermediate space between what has already been built, what is undergoing change, and what still needs to be understood.
