The Emirates Drug Authority (EDA) has granted approval for a new indication of the drug Foundayo, also known as orforglipron, for adults suffering from type 2 diabetes.
According to the regulator, this approval makes the United Arab Emirates the third country in the world to permit the use of this medication, developed by Eli Lilly, for diabetes therapy. Previously, Foundayo was already approved in the UAE for weight control in April.
Foundayo is an oral medication taken once daily and belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Unlike injectable agents of the same category, it is a non-peptide tablet that can be taken without restrictions on diet or water intake.
The drug is intended to help adults with type 2 diabetes improve blood glucose control and support long-term weight loss. It should be used under a doctor's supervision in combination with a suitable diet and regular physical exercise.
The EDA stated that this approval is part of the regulator's efforts to expand access to innovative treatment methods and provide patients with greater choice for managing chronic diseases.
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either does not use insulin correctly or produces insufficient amounts, leading to high blood sugar levels. Without proper control, this increases the risk of complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
The regulator also strongly urged residents to understand the risk factors for developing diabetes, undergo regular check-ups, and maintain medical surveillance to ensure early detection and minimize the probability of complications.
The approval of Foundayo adds another treatment option for adults with type 2 diabetes in the UAE, where health authorities continue to focus on prevention, early diagnosis, and ensuring access to newer methods of treating chronic conditions.
