Uzbek weightlifter Akbar Jurayev won the World Weightlifting Championships, securing a gold medal and renewing his world record. The competition took place in Ningbo, China.
In the under 110 kilograms weight category, the 27-year-old athlete managed to lift 198 kilograms in the snatch, exceeding his previous achievement by one kilogram. According to information from the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan, Jurayev demonstrated the best result among all participants in the snatch exercise, becoming the gold medalist.
Previously, the world record in this discipline was 197 kilograms, which Jurayev set on September 29 at the Asian Games held in the Japanese city of Nagoya. Although he had already guaranteed himself gold in the snatch, the determination of the absolute world champion is not yet complete, as athletes must compete in the clean and jerk, after which the winners in the total combined results will be determined.
Akbar Jurayev has a rich track record: he is an Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020 and a silver medalist from Paris 2024. Furthermore, in 2025, he became the absolute world champion in Norway, where he won three gold medals and set world records in both the snatch and the total combined results.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev previously congratulated the Uzbekistan team on its success at the Asian Games in Japan. The head of state specifically highlighted Akbar Jurayev's achievements, noting the world and Asian records he set in weightlifting.
