Bharti Airtel restores low-cost tariff plan after subscriber growth slowdown

Bharti Airtel has brought back its introductory 28-day tariff plan priced at 299 rupees, which had been withdrawn in August. This decision was made against the backdrop of slowing net customer additions in the second quarter of the fiscal year 2027.

During the quarterly call, CEO Shashwat Sharma noted that changes in tariffs were observed. The company will now focus efforts on other areas, such as price hikes, value-added services, international roaming, and balance top-ups, to sustain growth in Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) in subsequent quarters.

The operator's ARPU remained the highest among competitors, reaching 271 rupees in the second quarter, surpassing Reliance Jio's figure of 218.8 rupees. Reliance Jio debuted on the Indian stock market on October 28.

The net customer addition for the second-largest operator decreased by almost two-thirds, amounting to 716,000 people in the second quarter compared to 3.3 million in the first quarter. Meanwhile, customer churn consistently increased by three basis points to 2.9 percent. Management added that signs of recovery began to appear in the third quarter.

Shashwat Sharma also mentioned that rising smartphone prices negatively impacted customer acquisition, especially when transitioning from 2G to 4G or 5G. However, he noted the strong growth in the refurbished device market in India, which supports the upgrade of entry-level smartphones.

The CEO emphasized that operators will ultimately have to move away from offering unlimited voice traffic and data at relatively low prices towards a model that better monetizes actual data consumption. Furthermore, the operator is scaling back its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) expansion for home broadband, using it only as a temporary solution until fiber optic connectivity reaches the required area.

Data Centers and Growth Strategies

Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal explained that a new land parcel for data centers in Vizag will allow for the construction of a 400–500 MW capacity center. The company plans to explore other locations, aiming to increase total capacity to over 1 GW, as demand from the US may be directed to India. Modular installations are being used to accelerate data center development.

He added that they are considering building edge data centers on larger plots of land. The 'GPU as a Service' direction is also being explored, which requires more software and orchestration, similar to some neo-clouds.

Airtel is also looking into providing its artificial intelligence services as a stack to existing customers on top of cloud technologies and data centers. Sharma added that financial services through Airtel Money, Airtel Finance, and Airtel Payments Bank, along with future investments in data centers and Airtel Cloud, will remain growth priorities.

He concluded that the company leverages synergies in networks, technologies, operations, and supply chains across various businesses, including Indus Towers, which is expanding in Africa.

Airtel offers special deal for 200 rupees: 30 GB of data and access to YouTube Premium and OTT services

For users who use prepaid Airtel SIM cards and are concerned about advertisements while watching videos on YouTube, the company has introduced a new offer. As part of its OTT top-up worth 200 rupees, the ability to use YouTube Premium is now included. Thus, one package provides an additional 30 GB of data, ad-free video viewing on YouTube, and access to several other OTT platforms.

Airtel has partnered with YouTube, whereby prepaid users purchasing the entertainment top-up for 200 rupees receive YouTube Premium benefits. This package is valid for 28 days and includes an extra 30 GB of data.

Thanks to YouTube Premium, users can watch videos and Shorts without advertisements on the platform. Additionally, they gain access to YouTube Music Premium, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, and listen to audio videos even when the phone screen is locked or other applications are in use.

This package also includes access to entertainment platforms such as Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition, JioHotstar, ZEE5 Premium, and SonyLIV. Within Airtel's entertainment offerings, over 18 other OTT platforms are available, although the subscription level and provided features may vary on each platform. Therefore, it is recommended to review the terms in the Airtel app before purchasing.

It is important to understand that the YouTube Premium feature provided in this package is not a permanent subscription purchased separately. Its benefit is tied to the 28-day validity period of this top-up. After the package expires, YouTube Premium privileges cease, and to renew them, the top-up must be purchased again and the service activated through the Airtel app. One should not assume that the subscription will automatically activate after simply topping up the account.

Before making a purchase, certain conditions should be considered. The 200 rupee package from Airtel is an additional entertainment top-up, not a standard prepaid plan. This means that an active main prepaid plan must already be on the Airtel number. This top-up itself does not provide calling or SMS services. If the main tariff plan is exhausted, purchasing only this package will not restore calling and SMS functions, as its primary purpose is to provide additional entertainment features and data.

If a user is interested solely in YouTube Premium and does not need other OTT platforms or additional data, it is recommended to compare this offer with other options before buying. To activate YouTube Premium, the account must first be topped up by 200 rupees via the OTT top-up. Then, the Airtel app must be opened, navigate to the 'Rewards & OTTs' section, select the YouTube Premium option, and complete the process according to the on-screen instructions, ensuring the correct Google or YouTube account is selected.
