El Niño climate phenomenon may increase precipitation in southern Uzbekistan during winter

The developing El Niño climate phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean potentially could affect weather conditions in Uzbekistan. According to specialists, the southern part of the country may see slightly more precipitation than usual, although no serious deviations from the norm are predicted.

Climate expert Alexey Kokorin stated that there is a trend towards a slight increase in precipitation in Central Asian countries from November to January. He specified that this effect may be most noticeable in the south of the region, including southern Uzbekistan.

The specialist noted that a moderate increase in precipitation is expected in November, December, and January. However, Kokorin emphasized that these changes will be minor and will most likely remain unnoticed against the backdrop of natural seasonal weather variability.

Furthermore, he informed that the current manifestation of El Niño will be most intense in the equatorial zone of the Pacific Ocean and will affect fewer countries compared to some previous years. Explaining the dynamics of the phenomenon, he added that it will reach its greatest development in November and December, and will begin to weaken by January.

According to expert assessments, the consequences of the current El Niño for Uzbekistan will most likely be limited to a small increase in winter precipitation without a significant impact on the overall weather picture in the country. Previously, scientists warned that El Niño is capable of triggering an increase in mortality in various countries around the world due to extreme weather events, with some estimates suggesting that the number of victims could exceed 450,000 people.
