A 29-year-old woman suffering from persistent fever, despite extensive examination and empirical treatment, was brought to a tertiary care hospital in Germany.
Five years prior, the patient underwent a kidney transplant and regularly took immunosuppressive drugs, including tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and methylprednisolone.
During the medical examination, a healing injury left by a cat was discovered in the medial part of the right thigh. Additional investigation using T1-weighted abdominal MRI revealed an enlarged spleen, as well as altered areas in both the liver and the spleen.
This clinical case was presented by doctors Christoph Maler and Florian Kelble from Heidelberg University in the scientific journal The New England Journal of Medicine.
