Nvidia CEO summoned to US Congress over allegations of possible Chinese espionage

Republicans from three important committees in the U.S. House of Representatives requested that Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, participate in a private meeting with lawmakers. The purpose of this meeting is to clarify the executive's connection to a businesswoman associated with a company under investigation by the American government for alleged assistance to China in acquiring artificial intelligence (AI) chips.

The request was formalized on Thursday (5th) by congressmen Brian Mast, John Moolenaar, and Rick Crawford, who are responsible, respectively, for the Foreign Relations Committee, the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, and the Select Intelligence Committee.

The parliamentarians want Huang to appear on November 18th to discuss his interactions with Alice Huang, an executive at Megaspeed, based in Singapore. Furthermore, they intend to question him about Nvidia's security guidelines aimed at preventing espionage by foreign governments.

The deputies stated in the request that it is crucial for Congress to define the extent to which U.S. national security has been compromised.

John Rizzo, Nvidia spokesperson, did not confirm whether the CEO will accept the invitation. In a statement, he informed that the company has a high-level security team that accompanies Huang when necessary.

Commercial records accessed by the ImportGenius platform indicate that an entity linked to Megaspeed in Malaysia acquired, between June 2024 and February 2026, at least US$ 4.8 billion (approximately R$ 26.2 billion) in advanced AI equipment containing Nvidia chips and technology.

Authorities suspect that Megaspeed helped China circumvent American trade restrictions and gain access to the manufacturer's components.

Nvidia maintains that it complies with all legislation and denies any evidence that its chips are being smuggled to China. Last week, Rizzo also stated that Huang's meetings with Alice were neither unusual nor unexpected, as client meetings are part of a CEO's job, and Huang dialogues annually with thousands of executives from client companies.

The initiative by the three parliamentarians also draws attention by signaling a shift in the stance of Republican leaders, who have largely followed President Donald Trump in a less interventionist approach regarding the technology sector.

Huang established a close relationship with Trump in the last two years, and they frequently discuss technological topics. This move comes after the midterm elections in the United States, which exposed the concern of part of the electorate about the effects of the technology industry, such as the potential of AI to eliminate jobs and the creation of large data centers in local communities.

The negative sentiment towards large technology corporations greatly benefited Democratic candidates. The Republican action may indicate that the party does not intend to leave this issue solely in the hands of its political opponents.

This episode is also connected to a previous Congressional investigation. In April 2025, John Moolenaar and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party initiated an inquiry into Nvidia chip sales in Asia. However, in the following months, the Trump administration eased restrictions on the sale of the company's components to China.

Huang also accompanied Trump on his first diplomatic trip to the Middle East, during which the president announced large chip sales to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Nvidia also made a donation exceeding US$ 20 million (about R$ 109.2 million) for the construction of the White House ballroom and promised to invest US$ 500 billion (approximately R$ 2.73 trillion) in product manufacturing in the United States.

In June, Huang had already refused a Senate testimony request made by Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts (USA) and the main minority representative on the Banking Committee. Last week, after the report on the executive's relationship with Alice Huang was released, the parliamentarian reiterated her demand for his appearance.
