The UN Education in Emergencies Fund (ECW) announced that several governments have pledged $405.8 million to support the education of millions of children affected by crises.
ECW welcomed the 'notable start' of efforts aimed at reaching its target of $600 million for its activities over the next four years, especially against the backdrop of sharp reductions in international funding.
Considering the funds received before today's donor conference, the fund reported that the total amount of government pledges reached $541.6 million, which is 90% of the set goal.
ECW estimates that 258 million schoolchildren and adolescents are affected by conflicts or natural disasters, of whom 93 million lack access to education.
Sigrid Kaag from ECW emphasized that education is not a privilege but a fundamental right that every child should have from birth.
Germany made the largest contribution with an amount of 113 million euros, followed by the UK (108 million) and Norway with 65 million.
This fund is involved in building schools, purchasing educational materials, providing daily meals, and offering psychological support, among other services. Over its decade of existence, it has supported more than 16 million children and trained 300 thousand teachers.
