The week of the official release of Fedora Linux 45 has arrived. The new version of the distribution features the Gnome 51 desktop environment in its main variant, along with the Linux 7.2 kernel and several minor improvements.
Specifically, the variant that includes Gnome 51 is called Fedora Workstation 45. Although the visual changes in this version of the desktop environment are minimal, it improves various aspects of the user experience. Among these changes are smoother animation, support for automatic screen rotation, offline map availability, and performance optimization.
It is worth noting that this desktop environment version is also present in Ubuntu 26.10, which was released last month. Nevertheless, it is emphasized that both distributions represent completely different projects. For example, Ubuntu 26.10 is based on Linux 7.3, whereas Fedora Linux 45 uses Linux 7.2, as previously mentioned.
Despite the difference in kernel versions potentially seeming like a drawback for Fedora, the implementation of Linux 7.2 in the distribution was consistent and brought significant achievements. These include introductory support for the Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology in AMD graphics processors (providing data transfer speeds up to 48 Gbps via HDMI 2.1), performance improvements thanks to the Cache-Aware Scheduling mechanism, and adjustments in power management for certain laptops.
Other features of Fedora Linux 45 include the availability of the main versions at the specified links. Users installing the system for the first time are recommended to use Fedora MediaWriter or Rufus to create an installation USB drive or to test the distribution in 'live' mode (without installation). Users already using Fedora can update their version through the built-in operating system update mechanism.
