Sony reported a 44% growth in its net profit during the second fiscal quarter of 2026, even while facing a significant reduction in PlayStation 5 sales. In the period between July and September, the Japanese company achieved a profit of 449.6 billion yen, which is equivalent to approximately R$ 15.6 billion, based on direct conversion.
The financial data released this Thursday, November 5th, indicates that the company's total revenue grew by 10% compared to the previous year, reaching 3.4 trillion yen (equivalent to R$ 118.8 billion). Furthermore, operating profit advanced by 45%, with this result being driven mainly by the strong performance of the gaming and cinema divisions.
Regarding the PlayStation 5, Sony sold 2.6 million units this quarter, a lower number than the 4 million sold in the same period of 2025. Despite this 35% decline, the games and network services division showed expansion: this area's revenue rose by almost 9%, totaling 1.2 trillion yen (R$ 41.9 billion), while operating profit increased by about 83%, reaching 220.1 billion yen (R$ 7.6 billion).
This positive result was aided by game sales and the increase in digital services. 88.2 million games compatible with PS4 and PS5 were sold, compared to 80.3 million in the previous year. Titles developed internally by the company's own studios saw an increase of 6.3 million to 8.2 million units sold. Additionally, the proportion of digital downloads in game sales grew from 72% to 78%.
Network services, including PlayStation Plus, also showed growth, reaching 127 million monthly active users, up from 119 million recorded last year. A notable release was Marvel’s Wolverine, an exclusive launched in September, which sold 2.4 million copies despite receiving less favorable reviews.
The cinema segment also contributed to the overall performance. The movie Spider-Man: A New Day, released in July, grossed approximately US$ 2.52 billion (R$ 13.8 billion) globally. This success boosted Sony Pictures, whose operating profit jumped from 13.9 billion yen (R$ 481 million) to 92.6 billion yen (R$ 3.2 billion). The division's revenue also grew, rising from 346 billion yen (R$ 12 billion) to 513.7 billion yen (R$ 17.8 billion).
With the results obtained in the gaming and cinema sectors, Sony managed to exceed market projections. The group's operating profit totaled 622.3 billion yen (R$ 21.6 billion), surpassing the 505 billion yen (R$ 17.5 billion) estimated by analysts consulted by LSEG, the British provider of financial analysis.
Sony raised its operating profit forecast for the fiscal year ending in March 2027 by about 9%. The new estimate set is 1.8 trillion yen (approximately R$ 64.8 billion). In the games segment, Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19th, is expected to stimulate both game sales and demand for the PS5. However, the company is facing challenges in supplying the market due to the component crisis. Sony also mentioned that the increase in memory chip costs was a factor in the price adjustment of the PS5 and PS5 Pro made in April. The appreciation of these components continues to generate uncertainty about the cost of the next generation of PlayStation, whose launch date and price have not yet been confirmed.
