How to get a confirmed train ticket for the trip home for Diwali and Chhath

During the festivals of Diwali and Chhath, obtaining a confirmed train ticket becomes a serious problem when people travel home or celebrate the festival with family. The demand for seats on trains departing from major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Surat to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand significantly increases. Many passengers face getting tickets on the waiting list, after which the waiting for confirmation begins.

This year, Diwali falls on November 8th, and Chhath is on November 15th. For those who have not yet purchased a ticket for the journey home, there are various digital options available. These include the official IRCTC application, as well as platforms like ConfirmTkt, ixigo, and RailYatri, which can help check train availability, assess the status of waiting list tickets, and find alternative routes.

However, it is crucial to understand that none of the applications can guarantee seat confirmation on behalf of the railway. The probability of confirmation displayed in the applications is merely an assumption based on old data and available information. A ticket is considered confirmed only when its status changes in the railway system.

The most reliable way to book railway tickets is through the official IRCTC application and website. Here, passengers can check for train and seat availability by specifying the travel date, origin, and destination stations. Through this platform, one can also book general reservation tickets, express tickets, and premium express tickets.

After logging into the application, the user must select the travel date and stations. Then, information about available trains and classes will be displayed. By selecting a train with available seats, passengers fill in their details and complete the payment. Upon successful booking, a PNR number is issued, which allows tracking the ticket status.

The IRCTC application also provides features to view PNR status, train availability, schedules, and booked tickets. It includes a primary passenger list option, allowing users to save family member information in advance, saving time when re-entering names and ages.

For those booking tickets on the waiting list, the Alternate Travel Plan feature from ConfirmTkt is discussed. Previously, the company presented it as Travel Guarantee. According to this functionality, if a ticket is not confirmed before the schedule is made, the passenger may receive a refund of the ticket cost and a travel coupon.

Nevertheless, an important distinction must be considered here. According to current ConfirmTkt rules, the 3X refund benefit applies to air and bus travel options, while for trains, it is 2X, not 3X. This means that if you choose this plan when booking a railway ticket, and the ticket remains fully on the waiting list until the schedule is made, then upon meeting the conditions, you will be refunded an amount equal to the ticket cost to the original payment method, plus an additional coupon for the same amount. Thus, the total benefit can reach 4000 rupees if the ticket cost was 2000 rupees, but considering it as 3X refund would be incorrect.

It is necessary to understand the coupon mechanism. The coupon is not a monetary sum; it can be used as a discount on the next train booking. The coupon is valid for seven days and should be used for the same mode of transport that was selected when receiving the coupon. It can be used within a single booking.

It is important to note that this service is paid and requires separate payment. It is not available for all trains and classes. It can only be selected on trains where the corresponding tag is displayed during booking. The most important condition is that the refund will only be provided if the entire booking is on the waiting list at the time the schedule is made. If the ticket becomes RAC or if some passengers in one PNR have confirmed tickets while others remain on the waiting list, the refund under this plan will not be provided. The refund amount does not include service charges, convenience fees, payment gateway fees, discounts, and money paid for the Alternate Travel Plan.

If the ticket is shown on the waiting list on the IRCTC website, the ixigo and RailYatri applications can also be useful. On these platforms, besides showing train availability and PNR status, an assessment of the probability of confirmation for a waiting list ticket is provided.

RailYatri uses the Confirmation Probability feature, which relies on historical booking data, route load during holidays, and statistics on how many tickets were confirmed from the waiting list at the same time last year. Based on this data, the application shows the probability of confirmation in the waiting list in High, Medium, or Low categories. This gives the passenger an idea of the chances of confirming the current waiting list number, but it is not an exact forecast. The actual situation may change due to sudden demand surges, cancellations, or other reasons related to train capacity.

ConfirmTkt also allows viewing the predicted probability of ticket confirmation from the waiting list along with checking PNR and ticket status. Options such as Alternate Travel Plan may also be displayed here. It should be remembered that the confirmation forecast and the ticket

Indian Railways introduces rule change from October 27: Insurance will be available when purchasing tickets at stations

An important notification has emerged for millions of people who use the services of Indian Railways daily for comfortable and economical travel. A change in the railway ticket booking rule comes into effect on October 27, which is directly related to ensuring passenger safety.

This significant change is being implemented by Indian Railways based on a Supreme Court directive. Passengers can now avail themselves of insurance services even when purchasing tickets through counters at railway stations.

The details of the change in Indian Railways rules are that starting October 27, insurance coverage will be provided when tickets are purchased directly at the counters. Previously, the option to choose travel insurance was only available when booking tickets through the Indian Railways website or mobile application managed by IRCTC.

The decision to change the rules and introduce a new regulation is driven by concern for traveler safety. It was made following a Supreme Court directive after a railway accident occurred in Odisha in June 2023. The court itself issued an order on October 6 of this month, requiring that insurance coverage extend to all tickets bought at railway station ticket offices.

Under the existing optional railway travel insurance program, available during online ticket booking, passengers can receive coverage up to 10 lakh rupees in case of death or permanent total disability. The cost of the online insurance policy is only 45 paise per passenger, including taxes. However, information regarding the premium rate, required documents, and compensation procedures for tickets bought at counters is not yet fully clarified.

The introduction of insurance coverage for tickets bought at counters, similar to that provided for online tickets, is particularly important for passengers who rely on station counters. The Supreme Court's goal is to equate offline booking with online booking, ensuring that passengers who do not use digital platforms are not left without insurance protection.

The Supreme Court also warned Indian Railways that the Railway Board itself would bear responsibility if this directive is not complied with.

Who can book train tickets a year in advance instead of two months

Currently, during the holiday season, booking confirmed train tickets is becoming a difficult task for passengers because standard advance booking is only available 60 days before the trip, and even when online sales open, tickets quickly become general class.

However, there are categories of passengers who are given the opportunity to book tickets a year in advance. For regular travelers in India, the advance booking period is limited to two months. However, foreign tourists visiting India, as well as Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), can book tickets up to one year in advance.

This refers to the Foreign Tourist Quota (FTQ). According to Indian Railways rules, this quota is reserved for both foreign passport holders and NRIs. To use this quota, travelers must have a valid foreign passport or NRI status.

Thanks to this quota, NRIs can book confirmed seats for their journey even before arriving in India. This service is only available in certain premium classes, such as First AC, Second AC (2A), and Executive Chaircar (EC). Indian Railways started offering the option to book seats 365 days in advance for foreign tourists and NRIs starting from July 2017.

To do this, the passenger must provide their international phone number when registering or updating their profile on the IRCTC website. A one-time password (OTP) is sent to the registered number to verify the phone number. Then, a second OTP is also sent to the email address for confirmation.

When booking an e-ticket, all passport numbers of foreign tourists must be entered into the system. If the passenger has not verified their phone number before purchasing the ticket, they will be prompted to update their profile by adding a new international number and International Direct Dialing (ISD) code.

Confirmation of this updated profile is done via SMS or OTP sent to the international number. Users can choose to pay using international debit or credit cards through the payment gateway. Under the FTQ, tickets can be booked 365 days in advance. Furthermore, foreign citizens are provided with the option to book urgent tickets through this quota, which simplifies obtaining confirmed tickets.

Information about ticket bookings is sent to foreign passengers via international SMS. After seat allocation by the PRS system, passengers can also download boarding passes for booked tickets from the website. Booking information is also sent to the registered email address of the foreign user.
