The striker for Saudi club Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo, has officially announced the end of his career with the Portugal national team. This decision comes after 23 years of service to the national squad.
The footballer shared a farewell video on social media, where he expressed gratitude to fans, teammates, and everyone who supported him throughout his career. Ronaldo noted that making this decision was difficult, as it required both a rational and an emotional approach. He stated: 'It is time to return the number 7 jersey. It was not an easy decision because some decisions are made not only by the mind but also by the heart.'
Ronaldo's debut for the Portugal national team took place on August 20, 2003, in a friendly match against Kazakhstan. During his participation, he played 234 games and scored 146 goals, setting world records for the most matches and goals among men's national teams. While playing for Portugal, he achieved victories in the 2016 European Championship and twice won the UEFA Nations League title—in 2019 and 2025.
Despite ending his appearances, Ronaldo emphasized his intention to continue supporting the national team. This statement followed several weeks after disagreements with the national team coach Jorge Jesus, which led to the player being forced to leave the squad prematurely. Earlier reports indicated that Cristiano Ronaldo had been temporarily suspended from matches for the Portugal national team due to a conflict with the coach; at that time, the player apologized to fans and partners, stating that he did not plan to end his international career.
