Player Swap Between CSK and SRH Ahead of IPL 2027: Liam Livingstone and Others Join Teams

A major player exchange took place between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchises before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Four players were involved in this agreement.

As a result of the deal, English all-rounder Liam Livingstone and Australian Jack Edwards joined the Chennai Super Kings squad. On the other hand, fast bowler Khalil Ahmed and Australian Nathan Ellis moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The most discussed figure in this deal is Liam Livingstone. Previously, Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired the explosive English all-rounder for 13 million rupees, but he is now moving to CSK for a lower price of 6 million rupees. Thus, Livingstone incurred a loss of 7 million rupees in this exchange, while CSK expects him to provide options in both attack and defense.

Australian fast all-rounder Jack Edwards also joined the Chennai Super Kings. He will play for the team that has won five championships, maintaining his current annual salary of 3 million rupees. Although Sunrisers Hyderabad included him in their squad before his international debut, a leg injury prevented him from playing any matches in IPL 2026.

Through this deal, Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired left-arm fast bowler Khalil Ahmed. He will remain part of the SRH squad with his current annual salary of 4.8 million rupees. Khalil previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2018 to 2021.

Khalil Ahmed demonstrated impressive performance for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, taking 15 wickets in 14 matches. However, in IPL 2026, he could only play in five games because he was excluded from the season due to a right quadriceps injury. Now, the Hyderabad team hopes to strengthen its batting lineup with him.

Additionally, star Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis also transferred to Sunrisers Hyderabad as part of this exchange. He will play for the team while retaining his current annual salary of 2 million rupees. Ellis is known for his varied bowling style and effectiveness in late overs.

Elbie Morkel and Mohit Sharma return to CSK staff as assistant coaches

Significant changes have occurred within the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Following the departure of Stephen Fleming, who served as the team's head coach for 16 years, management has handed over control to the new head coach, Zahir Khan.

Under Zahir Khan's leadership, the Chennai team has brought back two of its most experienced and proven players. Former all-rounder from South Africa, Elbie Morkel, and former player who earned the Indian Diamond Cap, Mohit Sharma, have rejoined the team as assistant coaches.

Elbie Morkel and Mohit Sharma share very long and emotional ties with CSK, having created many memorable moments at the Chepauk stadium. Morkel was a mainstay for CSK from 2008 (the first IPL season) until 2013.

Morkel, who was an integral part of the championship-winning squads in 2010 and 2011, scored 827 runs and took 76 wickets in 78 matches for Chennai. After working as a coach for the Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20, he will now be directly involved in the CSK coaching staff.

Mohit Sharma, who debuted for CSK in 2013 and won the Diamond Cap in 2014 with his powerful slow balls, will also contribute to the development of the Yellow Army. Mohit, who announced his retirement from cricket in December 2025, took 58 wickets in 48 matches for Chennai.

Following the departure of Stephen Fleming, who became the England Test team's head coach, CSK has completely revamped its backroom staff. With the exit of veterans such as Mike Hesson (batting coach) and Ariff Simmons (bowling coach), Zahir Khan has been given complete freedom to select the coaching staff as he sees fit. Nevertheless, field coach James Foster and Shridharan Sriram will remain in their positions from last season.
