At the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), an innovative practice is underway to utilize garden waste for preparing food for a large number of students. With support from the startup Infixen, funded by IIT Bombay, the garden waste is gaining new value.
Nearly two tons of garden waste are transformed into fuel pellets daily, which are used to power the kitchen in Hostel 16. This process yields significant environmental and economic benefits.
As a result of implementing this system, the consumption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking for over 1200 students has decreased by 60%. Furthermore, waste that previously cost the institute nearly 50 lakh rupees annually for transportation is now becoming a valuable resource.
Thus, reducing waste and lowering fuel consumption contributes to creating a more sustainable cooking process, reminding us that solutions to major environmental problems are often nearby.
