Benefits and allowances for Agniveers after four years of service: from fund to quotas in state structures

After completing the four-year term of service under the Agnipath program, not all Agniveers remain in the army as regular servicemen. According to established procedures and organizational needs, up to 25 percent of them may be included in the permanent force. The remaining servicemen return to civilian life, which raises questions about the benefits provided to them, such as pension, allowance, or quotas for government service.

Service Fund Payment

Agniveers who served four years under the Agnipath scheme are paid a one-time service fund package. This package includes the amount contributed by the Agniveer themselves, as well as an equivalent amount from the state, taking into account applicable interest. According to data published at the beginning of the program, the size of this package was approximately 11.71 million rupees. The Agniveer's contribution was estimated at about 5.02 million rupees, and the state's contribution was an equal amount. Since this is a one-time payment and not a monthly pension, the final amount may change due to interest accrual. It is important to note that this package is exempt from income tax.

Pension and Allowance Issues

Agniveers leaving the army after four years of service do not receive a pension or allowance similar to those granted to regular soldiers. The government initially clarified that the right to a pension and allowance is not provided to servicemen who complete their service under the Agnipath program. However, for those Agniveers who are selected for the permanent force, the service conditions are different: they must serve a minimum of 15 years, after which they become eligible for a pension and other benefits available to regular servicemen.

Insurance Coverage During Service

During the four years of military service, Agniveers are provided with an untaxed insurance coverage of 4.8 million rupees. This insurance does not require the serviceman to pay additional contributions. Nevertheless, this coverage is valid only during the period of service. It automatically ceases upon discharge. In case of death or disability while performing duties, financial assistance and other benefits may be provided according to separate rules depending on the nature of the incident and government norms.

Opportunities in Government Service

To assist Agniveers in employment after completing their service, the government has centrally provided quotas and relaxations regarding age limits when applying for jobs in certain government structures. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that in July 2026, 50 percent of vacancies for constable (general duty) and rifleman positions in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Assam Rifles will be reserved for former Agniveers. Additionally, a three-year reduction in the maximum age limit will be provided. The first batch of Agniveers will receive a five-year reduction. These positions are also exempt from requirements regarding physical standards, physical fitness, and written exams, but candidates must meet the other requirements and rules of the respective competition for employment.

Quotas in the Railway Sector

Indian Railways has set quotas for former Agniveers: 10 percent for Level-1 positions and 5 percent for Level-2 and above positions. Recruitment for these positions is carried out through the respective railway recruitment boards and centers, and candidates must undergo the prescribed procedure and meet the criteria.

Skill Certificates and Education

During military training, Agniveers are taught not only military skills but also technical and other professional competencies. Upon completion of service, they are issued a skill certificate confirming their qualification and experience, which helps them seek employment in the private or public sector outside the army. Furthermore, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has entered into agreements with NIOS and IGNOU to enhance the educational level of Agniveers. Under these agreements, eligible Agniveers are given the opportunity to obtain certificates of secondary and higher secondary education, as well as a bachelor's degree. The government also provides priority allocation of MSME loans to support small business startups for Agniveers leaving service.

Differences in Benefits

It is important to understand that although Agniveers completing their service receive a service fund, skill certificates, and employment opportunities, they are not entitled to a pension and allowance like regular soldiers. The service conditions for those who enter the permanent force are different. Therefore, when assessing the benefits of Agniveers, it is necessary to distinguish between servicemen discharged after four years and those who remain in the regular army. Quotas and relaxations in government service are applied according to the rules of the specific competition and available vacancies.

CDS announced two-year extension of Agniveer service under the Agnipath program

The Indian government and armed forces are conducting a comprehensive analysis of the Agnipath program. Significant changes are being discussed as the first cohort of Agniveers approaches the end of their four-year service term, which expires in 2026-27. General NS Raja Subrahmanyam, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), stated that Agniveers will be granted a two-year service extension.

The two-year service period will be extended for selected Agniveers who will not be immediately offered a transition to the permanent force. Under the current system, Agniveers serve for four years, after which only 25% remain in the permanent cadre, and the remaining 75% are given the option to extend their service for two years.

The proposed extension is significant because retaining trained personnel in the army for some time instead of their complete discharge after four years allows for the maintenance of their experience and qualifications. Discussions are growing in military and political circles regarding the retention of personnel, their experience, and their future.

General Raja Subrahmanyam, CDS, emphasized that the program is continuously being improved based on ground feedback, as well as from commanders and the Agniveers themselves. The government's stance is clear: Agnipath is not a static system but a plan that will evolve over time.

Since the launch of the Agnipath program, a new path has opened up in the army for the youth; however, questions have arisen concerning lack of experience and uncertainty about the future due to the fact that most servicemen leave after four years. The two-year extension will be available to selected Agniveers who demonstrate superior performance.

This will give the army an advantage in terms of trained personnel, and the soldiers will gain additional experience and stability. In addition to pension accumulations, salary and other benefits will continue to be paid during the extension period. This step may help increase the program's acceptability among the youth.

Defense experts believe that such adjustments will make the program more practical. Learning from the mistakes of the first batch, the government is trying to strike a balance between increasing the retention percentage and providing an extension option. The CDS's statement clearly shows that feedback is being taken seriously. Official announcements are expected in the coming months. This review is a positive step towards enhancing the effectiveness of Agnipath, considering both the army's needs and the aspirations of the youth. Overall, this change could strengthen the young force of the Indian armed forces.

Age limit for government positions increased by five years in Tamil Nadu

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, announced significant support for youth preparing for public service by increasing the maximum age threshold for government vacancies by five years.

This concession will be valid for five years and will apply on top of existing age benefits. According to information provided by the news agency PTI, the overall age limit for Group 1 will increase from 32 to 37 years, and for Groups 2 and 2A, it will increase from 30 to 35 years.

The Tamil Nadu government has expanded the maximum age for applying for government jobs. Minister Vijay made this announcement on Friday. Previously, there was a fixed age for each position that prevented older candidates from applying. Thanks to the new decision, many applicants will have the opportunity to retake the examination.

According to an official notification, this decision was made in response to requests from candidates preparing for public service. These candidates approached the government asking for additional opportunities to participate in competitive examinations. The government took this requirement into account and provided relief regarding the age limit.

This five-year concession will only be effective for five years. The official document clearly states that this benefit will be added to existing age benefits. This means that categories already having benefits will also receive these five extra years. This concession applies to various service groups and social classes.

For general category candidates in Group 1 services, the maximum age has been increased from 32 to 37 years. For candidates from reserved categories, this limit has been raised from 37 to 42 years. As for candidates with disabilities, the limit for the general category will rise from 42 to 47 years. Meanwhile, candidates with disabilities from reserved categories can apply up to 52 years old, whereas the previous limit was 47 years.

In Group 2 and Group 2A services, the age limit for the general category is set at 35 years, which is higher than the previous 30 years. For candidates with disabilities in these services, the limit for the general category has increased from 40 to 45 years. In these services, there is currently no upper age limit for candidates from reserved categories.

It is expected that this resolution will benefit thousands of candidates preparing for public service in Tamil Nadu, as the range of application opportunities will expand. The revised age limits will be in effect for five years, during which eligible candidates can participate in competitions for state government positions.
