The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has appointed Lawrence Aadnesgaard as the interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a six-month term, effective November 1st. This decision was made following the NSFAS Executive Committee meeting on October 26th, while the search for a permanent leader continues.
The appointment is intended to ensure continuity in senior management and maintain effective governance and oversight of the organization's operations during the transition period. Aadnesgaard is a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) with a Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accounting and a postgraduate diploma in accounting from the University of Cape Town.
He possesses over ten years of professional experience at the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) since 2015, where he was appointed Audit Manager in January 2023. According to NSFAS, his experience includes public sector auditing, financial reporting, risk management, internal control, and results accountability.
Furthermore, Aadnesgaard has internal experience within NSFAS, participating in the organization's annual audits, including audits of its student loan portfolio, for approximately nine years. This has allowed him to become familiar with loan portfolio financial modeling, loan repayments, actuarial assumptions, as well as the legislative and reporting frameworks governing the scheme.
The NSFAS Board stated that his professional competence and familiarity with the organization's operations will help maintain stability and support priorities during the transition period. Deputy Chairperson of the Board, Advocate Richardt Thlou Ramashia, commented on the appointment, noting that the primary objective was ensuring leadership succession and organizational stability during the process of finding a permanent CEO.
Ramashia emphasized: 'We are confident that Mr. Aadnesgaard's professional expertise, management experience, and institutional knowledge will help NSFAS remain focused on its mandate and strengthen accountability during this period.' The Board also clarified that the interim appointment does not alter the legally established mandate of NSFAS—providing financial aid to students from low-income and working-class backgrounds to access higher education and training.
The organization will continue to focus on the efficient administration of student financial aid, improving operational efficiency, strengthening accountability and governance, and maintaining relationships with higher education institutions, the government, and other stakeholders. NSFAS reported that the search for a permanent CEO is ongoing, and further information will be provided.
