According to the eThekwini Municipality, Durban residents are nearing the availability of a new public transport option, as the municipality plans to introduce the first section of its GO!Durban Integrated Public Transport network in December 2026.
This project, which was first announced in 2014 under the previous mayor James Nkumalo, faced several obstacles, as detailed by the publication IOL.
A significant step forward was the signing of a Process Agreement by the Municipality and representatives from the minivan and bus industries for the GO!Durban Corridor 3 (C3) on October 30th at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
The city also unveiled a new GO!Durban bus that will operate on a route connecting Bridge City in KwaMashu with Pinetown. Once operational, C3 is expected to improve residents' access to workplaces, educational institutions, medical facilities, and other essential services along this corridor.
The signing ceremony was part of the City's Transport Month program under the theme 'Building the Network Together.' The Municipality clarified that this agreement defines the terms for the participation of minivan and bus operators affected by the corridor in the new transport system. Services will be provided through official Vehicle Operating Companies that have contracted with the City.
In a statement, the municipality emphasized that the agreement represents a major step in strengthening cooperation between the government and the public transport industry. City Manager Musa Mbele stated that the City remains committed to providing residents with safe, reliable, and accessible public transport.
Mbele noted: 'The GO!Durban C3 Process Agreement represents important progress in strengthening cooperation between the government and the public transport sectors as we work towards creating a network that serves our communities and supports economic participation.'
The Chairperson of the eThekwini Metropolitan Taxi Council, Matula Mkhize, characterized the signing as a substantial achievement for the public transport sector. He indicated that it reflects the progress made through continuous engagement, consultation, and partnership between the municipality and stakeholders.
The event also allowed delegates to familiarize themselves with the infrastructure and systems that will support the new service. They visited the Westrich station at Midway Crossing, where they inspected the fare collection system, including turnstiles that passengers will use when traveling on the network. Delegates also observed the operation of feeder services and visited a facility where I AM GO! cards are issued as part of the customer registration process.
Before passenger services commence, the municipality and its partners must finalize operational contracts, as well as conduct testing and commissioning of the infrastructure, vehicles, and systems. Corridor C3 will be the first to operate under Phase 1 of GO!Durban. This will be followed by corridors C1, C9, and C2, as well as the CBD Distribution System. The launch will occur after approval by the Business and Operational Plans Council of GO!Durban on September 1, 2026, which defined the roadmap for implementing the integrated public transport network.
