The Indian drone manufacturer ideaForge demonstrated a significant financial turnaround in the second quarter of fiscal year 27, driven by strong execution and technological innovations.
Ankit Mehta, co-founder and CEO of ideaForge Technology, noted that building on a solid start in Q1 FY27, the second quarter marked further progress in order fulfillment, new product development, and preparation for upcoming procurement opportunities.
In Q2 FY27, operating revenue reached 91.3 crore rupees, a 124% increase compared to Q2 FY26. For the first half of FY27 (H1 FY27), operating income grew by 199% year-over-year, reaching a record 159.9 crore rupees from 53.5 crore rupees in H1 FY26. This growth was supported by fulfilling over 50% of the initial order volume.
The defense sector was the primary source of income, contributing 65.7 crore rupees, or 72% of Q2 FY27's operating revenue. The civil and corporate segments contributed 25.6 crore rupees, or 28% in Q2 FY27. This contribution is attributed to mapping projects, public safety monitoring, and Drone-as-a-Service subscriptions, which provide cloud-based drone operations.
The company returned to profitability, recording a Profit After Tax (PAT) of 6.5 crore rupees in Q2 FY27, corresponding to a net margin of 7.1%. This contrasts with a loss of 19.6 crore rupees and a negative margin of 48.1% in Q2 FY26.
EBITDA reached 23.2 crore rupees with a margin of 25.4%, compared to a loss of 8 crore rupees and a negative margin of 19.6% in the quarter a year prior. Total expenses in Q2 FY27 increased by 41.8% year-over-year, totaling 90.1 crore rupees. Material costs accounted for the largest share of expenses in Q2 FY27 at 48.1 crore rupees (53.4% of total expenses), followed by employee benefits (16.6 crore rupees, 18.4%), other expenses (16.0 crore rupees, 17.8%), depreciation and amortization (14.7 crore rupees, 16.3%), and financial costs (1.0 crore rupees, 1.1%).
Mehta commented that the company maintained its execution pace despite ongoing global supply chain constraints and some delays in client order approvals. He added that while these issues remain significant, they continue to closely monitor developments and take measures to minimize their impact on operations and deliveries.
The firm secured financing of 151 crore rupees in the form of research debt from the Technology Council to develop the YETI drone, intended for mid-level logistics with a payload capacity of 200 kg over a distance of more than 200 km. Field testing of the hybrid tactical drone ZOLT was also completed; it is capable of operating for 100 km and 6 hours with electronic warfare resistance for reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting missions.
Furthermore, raising equity capital through QIP allowed the complete repayment of debt. Nevertheless, obstacles persist related to global supply bottlenecks, delays in client order acceptance, and a shrinking order book, which stood at 202.2 crore rupees at the end of Q2 FY27, down from 350.8 crore rupees in Q3 FY26, as fulfillment outpaced new contract acquisition. High working capital intensity remains: inventory stands at 155 crore rupees, and trade receivables at 161.1 crore rupees. However, the projected Fast Track procurement portfolio worth approximately 20,000 crore rupees provides a strong medium-term outlook.
