Coach Rassie Erasmus has decided to prioritize experience over youth in the upcoming November match between the Springboks and Italy, forcing six inexperienced players to wait for their chance.
However, the debut wait for young playmaker Yakin Ahmed may be extended after he sustained a shoulder injury, which prevented him from participating in pre-World Cup training sessions on Saturday at the Allianz Stadium.
The South African team will begin its tour in Turin (match at 14:45) against the Italians, and Erasmus selected a near-full squad. He explained that they aim to start the game with maximum effort, thus preferring stability over experimenting with young players in this confrontation.
The World Cup champions will also face France in Paris (November 13) and Ireland in Dublin (November 21) as part of the tour aimed at reaching the Championship Final weekend.
Ahmed, playmaker Loan Gilliam, center Marcus Muller, wing Sebastian de Clercq, lock Riley Norton, and forward Manu Tsituka were not included in the squad for the match against Italy because Erasmus gave them time to adapt.
Erasmus noted: 'Yakin has a shoulder injury, and he was just observing from the sidelines.' He added: 'It doesn't help if he is here and sees everything but cannot feel it himself. We would like to have Wusi Moyo here, but he is also injured. We could only select 33 people, and we probably would have managed with them, but we chose 37 players.'
The coach continued: 'We know we have other players who have played for us, but guys like Riley, Loan, Marcus, will not be upset about not being chosen. They are simply happy to be here and learn. For them, it is a bonus. They miss URC games, they provide good opposition in training, they keep the senior players in tune and demonstrate energy.'
He emphasized: 'None of them guaranteed themselves a game, but they train four weeks with the rest. That is our intention.'
Erasmus reported that the decision regarding Ahmed's return to South Africa will be made within the next one or two days. However, the playmaker will be given a couple of days to study some aspects from senior Springboks players such as Mani Libbok, Sasha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Damian Willemse, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, and Kobus Reinah.
According to the coach, Ahmed openly discussed discomfort in his shoulder, which was a positive sign. 'He was honest about the injury; sometimes players hide it. He will undergo an examination. But it helps if he is here and can just observe. We want him to participate in training. It is great if he can learn, but if we have two injuries now, and we need someone and he cannot play, we will make a decision.'
Ultimately, the coach concluded: 'It looks like he will go home.'
