Erasmus named experienced Springboks squad for match against Italy in Nations Cup

Rassie Erasmus has decided to use an experienced and stable Springboks lineup for the first test match of the Nations Cup against Italy, which will take place on Saturday.

Only one player in the squad has not played for the world champions this season—it is lock Salmaan Moerat, who plays in France. He will take position No. 4 instead of injured Eben Etzebeth, and Siya Kolisi will lead the team. Despite several players being in the tour with the Springboks, there were no debutants in the squad.

The choice of a consistent squad for the match in Turin indicates that Erasmus expects this team to set the tone for their European tour before the final weekend.

Springboks Squad

Moerat will play alongside hardworking Juan Nortje in the center as a physically strong forward. The forward line includes Ox Nche, Thomas du Toit, and hooker Malcolm Marx. Behind them, the back-row trio in the squad will consist of captain Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and flanker Jasper Wiese.

The Springboks' backline is also stable: midfielders Morne van den Berg and Sasha Feinberg-Mngomezulu will dictate the pace of the game along with the experienced midfield pairing of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel. Behind them will be the triumvirate of Ethan Hooker, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and Damian Willemse.

Erasmus has prepared a bench with six forwards and two back-row players. Jan-Hendrik Vessels, Gerhard Steenkamp, and Vilko Lou will serve as reserve forwards. Lud de Jager will cover the lock position, while Cameron Hanekom and Paul de Villiers will complete the forward squad. Grant Williams and Mani Libbok will provide support in the backline.

Currently, the Springboks are in first place in the Southern Hemisphere standings with 15 points, tied with New Zealand but ahead due to a better point difference. After the match, they will travel to Paris to face France (Friday, November 13), and then head to Dublin to play Ireland (Saturday, November 21) in the last group match before the Final Weekend, which concludes on Sunday, November 29.

Erasmus stated: 'We have three difficult matches ahead if we want to qualify for the final match of the Final Weekend, so our next three games will be vital in building a solid foundation for the tour.' He added: 'All our energy is currently focused on the match against Italy. Fortunately, some players from Japan were able to reach Italy earlier than the rest of the team, so they have been working with part of the coaching staff for several days and are fully fit, while our first training session was on Monday afternoon, so everyone is now on the same page.'

Springboks Coach Rassi Explains Decision to Use Main Squad Before Italy Match

The Springboks team decided to use almost a fully strengthened squad in the upcoming Nations Cup match against Italy. This decision was made by head coach Rassie Erasmus following the team's unsuccessful performance against Australia in Perth.

Erasmus fielded his main squad at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, aiming to build winning momentum early on. After this match, the team will face two difficult games against France and Ireland, which will take place after the opening in November.

Boks did not include players without international experience in the tour, returning to a 23-man squad that includes over 1000 matches. Only the starting fifteen have 835 Test matches. This demonstrates how seriously Erasmus and his management take this meeting, despite the Italian national team facing several injuries among veterans, including props Tommaso Menoncello and Juan Ignacio Brex.

Rassie Erasmus stated that the Nations Cup is a tournament where everyone participates. He noted that in the last game against Australia they 'went all out' and it didn't go smoothly, but some players got time on the field in Perth. Nevertheless, since there are three important matches ahead, and the biggest competition is the World Cup next year, they are trying to prepare for it.

He added that the team also needs to contend for the Nations Cup trophy in the playoffs or final round. Therefore, they obviously take this seriously. Moreover, they did not have as much time for training as other teams. Erasmus mentioned that they were lucky with about 10-12 players from Japan who were here with some coaches from last week. Their first training session was on Monday afternoon, and now everyone is up to speed.

According to Erasmus, choosing almost the full squad was not a difficult decision, and he is confident in the players' ability to perform well on Saturday. Since the Boks will play against France next Friday in Paris, and they will have to recover quickly, they will aim to gain as much momentum as possible and allow combinations to find each other again.

Despite potential questions in the coming days regarding why the Boks chose a stable squad, it is clear that the world champions are aiming to win another trophy after their victory in the 'Great Rivalry' with the All Blacks. Erasmus said they are close to the World Cup, and while experimentation is desirable, maintaining pace is important. He reported that he spoke with Italy's coach Gonzalo Quesada in London yesterday (Sunday), and they all strive to try different combinations, but also want people to maintain faith in them, and players to trust them.

Rassie selected the Springboks squad for the National Team World Cup

The announcement of the Springboks squad always brings both joy and disappointment. The 37-player squad prepared by Rassie Erasmus for the European National Team World Cup in November was no exception. Analysts are examining these changes as both winners and those who ended up on the losing list.

Winners

Earlier this year, Blitzbok fans wondered where coach Philip Snyman found his new standout player whose surname commentators struggled to pronounce. This player from Ceres in the Western Cape was a member of the Sharks junior team, and thanks to his excellent play in the sevens, JP Petersen promoted this fullback/flyhalf into the senior team's starting lineup at the end of the last URC season. Young athletes either succeed or fail at this level, and Giliomee was one who succeeded.

Zek Siyaya

Similar to Giliomee, Siyaya played in the Sharks starting lineup at the end of the last URC when coach JP Petersen had nothing but the opportunity to gain a lot of new for the new season by trying young players. At only 18 years old, Siyaya instantly became a sensation, revealing his potential and versatility by playing fullback, flyhalf, and winger. Sharks fans were disappointed when Giliomee moved to the Bulls in early October, but Siyaya's performances as a match-day fullback compensated for that loss.

Rassie Erasmus includes young players in the South Africa national team squad for the Nations Cup

The head coach of the Springboks, Rassie Erasmus, announced on Wednesday six players without top-level experience who will be included in the 37-man squad for the second stage of the Nations Cup in November. This decision demonstrates great faith in South Africa's rising talents as the world champions prepare for the final four matches of the season.

Among the debutants in the national team starting lineup were former stars of the Springbok junior squad: Yakin Ahmed, Luan Gillium, Marcus Müller, and junior captain Riley Norton. They were also joined by local league players Sebastian de Clercq and Emmanuel Tsituka.

The reason for bringing in these young prospects is twofold: Erasmus aims to strengthen the depth of the squad and ensure continuity of play while compensating for injuries to some key athletes.

All six players have previously played within the national system. Ahmed, Gillium, Müller, and Tsituka participated in matches for the SA 'A' team against Zimbabwe earlier this year, while Norton played against the Barbarians at the start of the season tournament. De Clercq returned to the team after participating in training camps last spring.

Erasmus emphasized that including these young players is a direct reward for stability in the local league and proven achievements at the youth level. He stated: 'We have been watching all six players for some time, and they have consistently performed in their franchises over the last two seasons, so they fully deserve their invitation.'

The coach added that building squad depth has always been one of the team's main principles, and all these players have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high franchise level. He noted: 'It is critical that Riley, Luan, and Yakin were also part of the Springbok junior squads that won the Junior World Cup, and Luan also played for the Blitzboks, so they know what it takes to perform at the highest level.' Despite the confrontation with leading teams in elite international rugby being a completely different test, Erasmus expressed full confidence in them.

These young players will play alongside an experienced core led by captain Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Damian de Allende. The main group won first place in the Southern Hemisphere Nations Cup in July, defeating England, Scotland, and Wales, and then lifted the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry trophy.

Nevertheless, the Boks will face the absence of several experienced figures due to injuries: Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, Andre Esterhuizen, and Handre Pollard will be unable to participate in the matches.

Erasmus added: 'It is always sad to lose players of this caliber, but we are pleased with the replacements in these positions, and it also gives other players a chance to show themselves.' He concluded: 'Most of the players in this group have been with us for most of the season and know our expectations, so we are happy with the selected squad.'

South Africa currently leads the Southern Hemisphere Nations Cup table in points difference, having the same number of points as New Zealand. The Springboks will play against Italy on November 7th, France on November 13th, and Ireland on November 21st, after which they will travel to London for the Final Weekend from November 27th to 29th.
