The return of experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the Indian team has raised questions. After an impressive performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the last two IPL seasons, Kumar returned to the Indian squad after almost four years.
However, his performance during the tour of New Zealand did not meet expectations: he managed to take only one wicket in four T20 matches. Observing this output, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan questioned the management's player selection decision.
Irfan Pathan stated that including Bhuvneshwar in the T20 squad was a serious mistake by the selectors. He noted that Bhuvneshwar Kumar is undoubtedly an experienced and outstanding bowler. Nevertheless, since the T20 World Cup is still far off, his return to this format made no sense.
Pathan added that by giving Bhuvneshwar a chance, the team management deprived young fast bowlers of a valuable opportunity. He suggested that if young players like Mayank Yadav or Prince Yadav had played regularly instead of him, they could have gained invaluable experience on difficult pitches, such as those in New Zealand, which would be beneficial for the team's future.
Furthermore, former captain and chief selector of India, Krishnamachari Srikanth, expressed deep disappointment with Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recent performance. Srikanth believes that Bhuvi's performance in the five-match T20 series against New Zealand was extremely mediocre, and he did not demonstrate the form he usually shows.
Despite the high hopes placed on Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned to the Indian team after a four-year break, he failed to meet these expectations on the challenging grounds of New Zealand.
Following the weak performance in the T20 series against New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar's place in the T20 squad may be under threat. India plans to play a T20 series against Sri Lanka soon, where selectors might consider giving a chance to Prasad Krishna or another young fast bowler. The final decision from the management remains open, considering the prospects.
