HACC 2026 объявил победителей, фильм Hijra получил награду за лучшуюfeature

The 2026 Hollywood African Cinema Connection (HACC) celebrated cinema from Africa and the Middle East, with Shahaad Ameen's film Hijra being awarded Best Feature Film.

The festival commenced with the screening of Mohamed Al-Daradji’s Irkalla: Gilgamesh’s Dream, alongside a special showing of Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story. This production, which originated in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, garnered recognition for its compelling narrative, high cinematic quality, potent performances, and effective use of the natural environment.

The festival's creative director, Weaam Williams, mentioned that she initially encountered Hijra at the Red Sea Festival and was immediately captivated by it. Williams stated that the positive reception from HACC attendees indicated the film deserved a much broader viewership. She further elaborated that HACC plans to seek avenues to present the film in local theaters and connect with communities throughout South Africa and the wider continent.

Izenzo Zami, created by Lwazi Duma, secured an honorable mention. The creative director noted that the jury was highly impressed by the film's scope, its directorial execution, and its utilization of established South African actors within a narrative concerning alcoholism.

Лучший короткометражный фильм

In Her Shoes, a film by Nigerian filmmaker Ella Ogechi Chikezie, won the award for Best Short Film. This movie portrays a young girl with autism residing in rural Nigeria, where awareness regarding this condition remains limited.

Ori, directed by South African filmmaker Sabelo Zamisa, received an honorable mention. This piece delves into themes of grief, modernity, and culture through the experience of a young individual who has lost a sibling.

Лучший документальный фильм

Dawood Hilmandi's Paikar was named the winner of Best Documentary. The film chronicles the lives of a family whose existence has been shaped by migration. Its production spanned across the Netherlands, Afghanistan, and Iran.

Paikar was chosen as the official entry representing the Netherlands for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The documentary received an honorable mention for Albert Maritz’s The Boy Behind the Wardrobe, a character-focused film detailing Winston Wicomb, who faced marginalization under apartheid due to his skin color. The film also investigates Wicomb’s professional relationship with cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard.

Награда основателя Weaam Williams

Okuruwo: Tale of the Holy Fire from Namibia was the recipient of the Weaam Williams Founder Award. Williams commended the film for its production standards and storytelling, characterizing it as an indigenous magical-realist tale centered on the Himba people.

The festival extended its gratitude to all the filmmakers who presented their works, as well as the organizing team, which included Nafia Kocks, Bheki Dladla, Thandekhaya Ncosani, Kastarine Kgola, and Andrew Ngare. HACC also acknowledged its audience and various partners, such as IOL, Photohire, and the First Nations Collective. Financing for HACC 2026 was provided by Holocene Films.

Documentary film 'Paikar' by Dawood Hilmandi to be shown at HACC 2026

The award-winning documentary 'Paikar' by Dawood Hilmandi will take place at the Hollywood African Cinema Connection (HACC) 2026 event on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 7:30 PM.

The screening will be held in the Robben Island Museum Auditorium at the V&A waterfront in Cape Town.

A Family Torn Apart by Conflict

The film 'Paikar' tells the story of Dawood Hilmandi, a filmmaker born in Afghanistan and living in Amsterdam, who attempts to reconnect with his authoritarian father.

What begins as a personal story evolves into a deep exploration of themes such as displacement, memory, and the sense of belonging. After Hilmandi left Afghanistan and Iran, he built a life in the Netherlands, while his parents and brothers remained scattered across the globe, which is a constant reflection of the impact of war and migration on the family.

Within the documentary, Hilmandi travels back to Afghanistan with his father via Iran. This journey allows for a reexamination of painful memories and a rethinking of their complex relationship, showing a gradual transition from confrontation to understanding. Although Hilmandi's father is initially presented as a restrictive figure, the film reveals him as a complex individual shaped by his own experiences of war and forced displacement.

The Meaning of the Title 'Paikar'

According to IDFA, the film's title is a Persian word meaning 'warrior' or 'war'. It originates from Hilmandi's family nickname and serves as both a source of pride and a burden, illustrating how conflict shapes family identity across generations.

As a documentary, 'Paikar' examines the concept of 'home' not as a fixed location, but as a complex, unstable reality existing abroad.

Event Details

The film 'Paikar' has a running time of 97 minutes. The HACC event is produced by African Film DAO and Holocene Films.

  • Literature: Includes ten categories, including Short Story, Chronicle, Debut Writer – Poetry, Debut Writer – Novel, Comics, Children's, Youth, Poetry, Entertainment Novel, and Literary Novel.
  • Non-Fiction: Covers six areas, such as Arts, Biography and Reportage, Creative Economy, Education, Business, and Health and Wellness.
  • Editorial Production: Recognizes work in Cover, Illustration, Graphic Design, and Translation, totaling four categories.
  • Innovation: Composed of three categories, it includes Reading Promotion – Project, Brazilian Book Published Abroad, and Reading Promotion – Digital Culture, the latter being a new addition this edition.

In addition to the awardees in these categories, the ceremony will feature the announcement of the Book of the Year, which represents the highest honor of the award.

Award news

In this edition, there have been significant changes: the winners of the Debut Writer – Poetry and Debut Writer – Novel categories will now also compete for Book of the Year. Furthermore, the Reading Promotion – Digital Culture category has been established, intended to honor projects that use digital platforms to connect readers and books, fostering reading communities.

In a parallel context, Atlético Mineiro player Gustavo Scarpa was invited to present one of the awards. He recently started publishing reviews on YouTube.
