Spa Treatment Review: Which Ones Are Worth Paying For and Which Can Be Skipped

Spa treatments can be quite expensive, and when faced with a diverse menu of tempting procedures, it's easy to lose control of spending. However, not every service justifies a high price. Many procedures, such as facial masks, body scrubs, or foot massages, can be replicated at home for a much lower cost.

The key to sensible spending lies in understanding which specific spa services offer genuine value. This article presents five procedures worth considering and five that can be skipped.

Five Spa Treatments Worth Paying For

Firstly, there is deep tissue full-body massage. A good massage is difficult to replicate on your own. Deep tissue massage uses targeted pressure to affect deeper muscle tension and stiffness, helping to relieve certain types of muscle discomfort and promoting relaxation.

Secondly, microneedling. Unlike standard facial care, microneedling is a specialized skin procedure that stimulates collagen production. It can improve the appearance of acne scars, uneven skin texture, and fine lines. Since this is a medical procedure, it should only be performed by a qualified medical professional, ideally a dermatologist.

Thirdly, professional chemical peeling. Professional chemical peeling uses carefully selected acids to exfoliate the skin. Depending on the concentration and composition, it can improve uneven skin tone, sun damage, certain types of acne, and wrinkles. This procedure must be tailored to the client's skin type under the guidance of a qualified specialist.

The fourth point is specialized pedicures. A professional pedicure involves more than just applying polish. Proper nail care, cuticle maintenance, and attention to rough skin help feet feel comfortable and well-cared for. If you have persistent foot problems, it is best to consult a podiatrist.

The fifth recommended treatment is laser hair removal. For those who prefer long-term hair reduction, professional laser methods can be a worthwhile investment. They work by targeting hair follicles, reducing regrowth over a series of sessions. Results vary, and an experienced practitioner should assess the skin and hair type before starting treatment.

Five Spa Treatments That Can Be Skipped

Among the treatments where you can save money are body scrubs. Exfoliating scrubs are easy to use at home, and this does not require an expensive visit to a spa salon.

Basic facial masks can also be omitted. A standard moisturizing or cleansing mask can be applied at home with equal ease.

Head massages can also be excluded. Although they are pleasant for relaxation, there is no need to pay premium prices for them in spas.

Foot massages are a nice addition, but they are unlikely to offer anything that cannot be achieved with simple home massage.

Finally, cellulite treatments. Many spa services promise to smooth out cellulite, but improvements are usually temporary. One should not expect long-term results from expensive wraps, massages, or similar methods.

Ultimately, a day at the spa should be enjoyable, but that doesn't mean booking every service on the menu. It is better to direct your funds toward procedures that provide real benefit rather than paying for what you can do yourself.

Nine new oncological drugs begin distribution through the SUS in Brazil

The Ministry of Health has started distributing nine high-tech medications intended for cancer treatment within the Brazilian public network. This initiative is part of a governmental plan focused on expanding access to oncological therapies in the country.

The drugs cover 13 clinical indications, covering treatments for high-incidence cancers such as breast, prostate, and lung cancer, as well as lymphomas. Initially, it is expected to benefit more than 116 thousand patients across 20 health units located in 17 states, with the goal of covering the entire public network by the end of the year.

Maria Ignez Braghiroli, an oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal tract tumors at Oncologia D’Or and a member of the Gastrointestinal Tumor Group at the State Cancer Institute of São Paulo (Icesp), detailed the impact of including these new medications in the Unified Health System (SUS), their applications, and the necessary care during treatment.

Among the introduced medications are abemaciclibe, used in breast cancer treatment, and pazopanib, indicated for advanced stages of kidney cancer. These therapies offer more treatment options but require rigorous medical monitoring and specific care.

According to Maria Ignez, abemaciclibe works by inhibiting proteins that stimulate tumor cell proliferation. It is used in a type of breast cancer that is hormone receptor positive. The treatment is often combined with hormonal therapy and, because it is oral, allows the patient to administer it at home, following prescribed times and doses, usually twice a day.

The oncologist warned that the most common side effect is diarrhea, especially in the first weeks, requiring constant monitoring. Additionally, it can cause fatigue and nausea in some individuals.

Regarding pazopanib, Maria Ignez clarified that it interferes with processes that promote tumor growth and the formation of blood vessels that nourish cancerous cells. It is an anti-angiogenic targeted therapy, released by the SUS for renal cell cancer, because it blocks signals that drive tumor growth and vascularization, restricting nutrient supply.

The use of pazopanib requires continuous vigilance, especially due to possible changes in blood pressure and liver function. Hypertension can occur even in patients without prior history, and liver changes must be checked through periodic blood tests. The doctor added that despite the increased risk of bleeding, the general tolerance of the drug is reasonable when compared to traditional chemotherapy.

Another novelty is the inclusion of trastuzumab, already used in certain breast tumors, to treat specific cases of stomach and gastroesophageal junction cancer. This indication is linked to the presence of the HER2 protein, whose amplification occurs in a percentage of gastric tumors.

Braghiroli explained that the efficacy of trastuzumab in this new context was investigated in studies over ten years ago. Initially, the drug was used in breast tumors with HER2 amplification, and a 2010 study demonstrated its benefit in treating gastric tumors with this molecular characteristic. Since then, it has been approved in combination with chemotherapy for specific tumors.

Research continues to advance, with recent studies, such as one from 2023, showing the benefit of combining immunotherapy with this combination. The doctor emphasized that for the SUS, this is a significant advance, given that this medication has proven efficacy for some time.

The list provided by the Ministry of Health includes treatments for various types of cancer, whose indications depend on the characteristics and stage of the disease. Abiraterone, for example, acts on hormonal stimulation, a key mechanism in prostate cancer progression. By reducing testosterone production, it helps control the disease, even in areas where conventional hormonal treatments were not fully effective.

According to the specialist, abiraterone is used when standard hormonal blockade methods fail, being a well-established treatment in clinical practice. However, not all treatments are universal; the indication for some depends on detecting specific genetic or protein alterations in the tumor cells, making laboratory tests crucial for therapeutic decisions.

Gefitinib, used against certain lung tumors, is an example of this. Although it is an established treatment, it is only indicated if the tumor presents a mutation in the EGFR gene, conferring sensitivity to the therapy. This alteration is confirmed by a molecular test performed on a tumor sample collected during diagnosis.

In addition to the provision of medications, the Ministry of Health has begun distributing 400 thousand fecal immunochemical tests to Brazilian states and capitals. This action aims to intensify the prevention and early diagnosis of intestinal cancer, targeting men and women between 50 and 75 years old.

The test detects traces of blood in the feces, even those invisible to the naked eye, which may indicate existing polyps or tumors. Early identification allows referral for complementary exams, such as colonoscopy, which allows visualization of the intestine and removal of polyps. Several medical societies recommend this preventive screening.

The fecal immunochemical test serves as the first phase of this investigation: a positive result directs the individual to colonoscopy to determine the source of the bleeding and evaluate lesions. Other improvements in the public network include the implementation of cervical cancer screening with DNA tests and federal funding for video-thoracic oncological surgeries, which allow for faster recovery.

Despite the expansion of these initiatives, the main challenge for the SUS remains ensuring that the availability of medications, exams, and procedures translates into effective care, guaranteeing complete patient follow-up throughout the entire treatment process.

When seeking a doctor for treatment, check the diploma and registration before starting therapy

When people fall ill, they often look for doctors among relatives, friends, or recently—through artificial intelligence and the internet. Sometimes the decision to undergo treatment is based on the number of a doctor's followers on social media or positive reviews on Google. However, is choosing a doctor solely based on these factors correct? Especially if the illness is serious or surgery is required, it is important to know what kind of doctor one should look for and what aspects to pay attention to.

Dr. Ushast Dir, director of the liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery department at Sar Ganga Hospital, shared this information. According to Dr. Dir, when searching for a doctor for treatment or surgery, six key aspects must be considered.

Firstly, it is extremely important to ascertain the doctor's medical diploma and registration. Dr. Ushast Dir emphasizes that one must verify the medical diploma of the doctor being sought for treatment or surgery and whether they are registered with the relevant medical council. In India, the registration of allopathic doctors can be checked in the records of the National Medical Council (NMC) and state medical councils.

Secondly, the doctor's experience in treating the disease should be assessed. If the illness is severe or surgical intervention is required, it is important to know how extensive the doctor's experience is in treating that specific disease. It is not enough to simply know how many years the doctor has practiced; one must also understand if they treat patients with a similar profile, how many patients they see daily, and what those patients think of them.

Thirdly, the number of surgeries performed should be inquired about. Before an operation, one can ask the doctor how many times they have performed the corresponding surgery, but the number of operations itself does not determine the doctor's competence. It is also important to know how many of these operations were successful and what the doctor's attitude towards their patients is.

Fourthly, the hospital and its team must be evaluated. Successful treatment depends not only on the doctor but on the entire medical team. Especially for major operations, attention should be paid to anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and emergency services at the hospital. It is also important to know the level of hygiene maintained in the hospital and the level of care provided to patients.

Fifthly, financial matters should be discussed openly. A good doctor explains the nature of the illness to the patient. Before starting treatment, it is necessary to clarify the full cost of medications, examinations, hospitalization, and the surgery itself. One must also find out when follow-up observation will be required after treatment is completed.

Finally, Dr. Dir warns against relying solely on Google reviews. Although viewing Google reviews is not a bad thing, making a final treatment decision based only on them is incorrect. Currently, reviews may be paid or written by the staff themselves, so it is necessary to choose a doctor by considering all the listed parameters.
