Activity surrounding the potential trade of Hardik Pandya before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 has intensified once again. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has shown renewed interest in the all-rounder from Mumbai Indians (MI).
As Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement, KKR is searching for a new captain, and Hardik is being considered as a strong candidate for this role. However, Hardik's second stint with Mumbai Indians has not met expectations, although his leadership qualities and playing abilities remain under scrutiny. Hardik's physical condition is a concern, especially after he did not play in any matches since the last IPL season.
According to a report by 'The Telegraph', initial discussions did not generate much enthusiasm from KKR due to concerns related to his injuries and health. Nevertheless, KKR's top management trusts his strategic thinking and leadership capabilities.
The main hurdle in acquiring Hardik is the demand from Mumbai Indians. According to the report, MI has requested Harshit Rana and Angkrish Raghuvshanha in exchange for Hardik. KKR is strongly unwilling to part with players like Sunil Nairen and Varun Chakravarty, who are match-deciding performers. The club's stance is also clear regarding Rinku Singh.
The 22-year-old Angkrish Raghuvshanha is showing good form in domestic cricket and is viewed as a future batting talent. Since Mumbai needs an Indian wicketkeeper, Raghuvshanha could be useful for that position, although letting him go would be difficult for KKR, given that Abhishek Nayar is his mentor.
Another potential option could be the Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, but due to his heavy schedule, his participation in a significant portion of the IPL is unlikely, as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and five Ashes matches in England are scheduled for January-February.
Mumbai Indians is also trying to bring in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi from Rajasthan Royals, but substantial progress has not yet been made in these negotiations. Mumbai needs an Indian spinner, and Bishnoi could fill that requirement. Acquiring either Raghuvshanha or Jaiswal would allow the Mumbai team to include local talent. Thus, there is a possibility of trading one of them before IPL 2027.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) also initially showed interest in Hardik. However, Chennai cannot offer him the captaincy role. Mumbai Indians is also interested in CSK's young batter Ayush Mehta, but Chennai has categorically refused to let him go. Another bowler, Shivam Dubey, could become part of the trade deal. Nevertheless, CSK CEO Kashi Vishwanathan has declined any negotiations on this matter.
The final deadline for retaining players is November 15th, before the mini-auction scheduled for December 16th in Goa. The trade window will close a week before the auction and reopen a week after it, running until the start of the IPL. Mumbai Indians aims to finalize the Hardik trade before the mini-auction, and KKR appears to be the most likely partner, as this could give Hardik a chance to become captain. However, the entire process depends on KKR's willingness to release Angkrish Raghuvshanha. Mumbai also does not want to participate in the auction with an uncertain retention strategy.
Reports suggest that negotiations between both franchises will resume this week, and as of now, a final decision on the trade has not been made.
