Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz explains Mayo and Igodaro's struggles with playing time

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz commented on why players Khanyise Mayo and Ethos Igodaro are finding it difficult to secure consistent playing time after joining the club Naturena.

Both forwards were acquired to strengthen Amakhosi's attacking capabilities, but neither has yet established himself as a regular participant in the Betway Premiership this season.

Mayo, who transferred to Chiefs after a successful spell at Cape Town City, arrived with expectations of contributing to the club's attack through goals and experience. Nevertheless, the South African player is still working on achieving the physical condition required for stable participation at the highest level.

Da Cruz believes that Mayo is making progress but does not want to rush him into play until he is ready to handle the demands of competitive football. He told reporters: 'Mayo is not far off; he is a high-class player, but for this game he was not physically ready to play this type of game. He needs to get into the game, and with Igodaro he needs to understand the playing model, so we will work with him.'

The coach's comments indicate that Mayo's absence from the starting lineup is largely related to his physical conditioning rather than doubts about his abilities.

As for Igodaro, he faces a different challenge as he continues to adapt to the tactical requirements of his new club. The Nigerian forward was signed to provide additional options in attack, but Da Cruz believes he first needs to familiarize himself with the team's playing philosophy before being considered for a more prominent role.

This adaptation is particularly important as Chiefs aim to achieve stability and improve their offensive output. Rather than fielding both forwards before they are ready, Da Cruz seems intent on giving them time to adjust and understand what is expected of them. Thus, Chiefs fans hoping for an immediate impact from the new attacking options will have to wait.

However, given that the season is still long, the coach hopes that both players can make the necessary progress and ultimately provide the attacking depth that Amakhosi requires.

Kaizer Chiefs lost the derby, but the performance might give Fernando da Cruz extra time

Despite the defeat in the derby, the performance of Kaizer Chiefs against Orlando Pirates may provide a valuable resource for coach Fernando da Cruz—time. Before the match, which took place at FNB Stadium on Saturday, many expected the Buccaneers to be stronger than their traditional rivals.

Given the impressive form of Orlando Pirates and the recent difficulties of Kaizer Chiefs, it was assumed that Amakhosi would approach the game cautiously, possibly focusing on minimizing losses. However, Kaizer Chiefs started the match aggressively, putting pressure on Pirates and creating higher-quality chances in the early stages of the game. For example, Vandelile Dube had an early chance, and Pule Mmodi also threatened, demonstrating Amakhosi's ability to take control of the confrontation.

At halftime, one could argue that Kaizer Chiefs could have been leading by two or three goals. Nevertheless, their inability to convert these chances ultimately worked against them. Orlando Pirates took the lead through Yanele Mbutume in the 24th minute, and six minutes later, Mmodi equalized, taking advantage of Sipho Tshabalala's error.

The decisive moment came in the 55th minute when Tshepang Moremi finished a counterattack involving Tapelo Mokobodi. This was a familiar scenario for Kaizer Chiefs: many promising moments, but insufficient quality in critical areas. Da Cruz is undoubtedly disappointed with the result, especially because his team had opportunities to turn the game away from a loss to Pirates.

However, the performance itself cannot be ignored. Over several weeks, questions have been raised regarding the Portuguese coach's approach, his team's identity, and his ability to get the most out of the talented squad. Against Pirates, signs were visible that he is trying to build something. Kaizer Chiefs played boldly, actively advancing, striving to dictate the terms of the game rather than just waiting for opponents' mistakes.

Such an approach carries risks, especially against a team like Pirates, which possesses speed and quality that allows it to punish teams in transition phases. Moremi's winning goal highlighted the danger of Chiefs' high defensive line, as Mokobodi found space to break through the midfield and free up the winger. Nevertheless, Da Cruz should not abandon attacking principles just because they did not lead to a victory in the derby. The task now is to find the best balance between initiative and defense.

The defeat also dropped Kaizer Chiefs to fifth place in the Betway Premiership table with 14 points after nine matches. Orlando Pirates are in second place with 25 points, trailing leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who rose to 26 points after defeating Durban City. This gap underscores the amount of work still to be done in Naturena.

But there is a difference between a loss caused by a lack of clear team identity and a loss caused by the inability to capitalize on chances. Chiefs demonstrated sufficient attacking spirit, indicating that Da Cruz has areas to work on. The derby was a missed opportunity, but it may not be in vain.

If Chiefs can transform this performance into consistent results, Da Cruz may win more time to implement his ideas.

Bayern Coach's Assistant Danks Reports Improvement in Vincent Kompany's Condition, But Prognosis Remains Uncertain

Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks provided an update on the condition of head coach Vincent Kompany, who lost consciousness during a club training session. Danks noted that the coach is 'improving day by day,' but there is 'no definitive prognosis.'

Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during a training session of FC Bayern's reserve team on Friday while observing the second squad. He was battling a viral infection, and medical staff advised him to rest.

At a press conference before the German Cup second-round match against Magdeburg, Danks stated: 'I stopped by briefly to see Vincent yesterday; he is in good spirits. It seems the situation is improving day by day. There is no final prognosis. He is very calm and is being given enough time to recover.' He added that they 'had a good talk, but it wasn't about football or tactics. He asked how we were doing.'

Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in the hospital and remains under medical observation. His coaching staff is overseeing training and matches until further notice.

Currently, Bayern is facing injury issues: Jamal Musiala was ruled out of the Champions League match against Arsenal due to a muscle fiber tear. Additionally, Manuel Neuer, who is struggling with a foot injury that led to his exclusion from recent Champions League matches, has not yet returned to full training with the first team.

Speaking about the squad, Danks noted: 'It is too early for Manuel Neuer and Jamal Musiala. The players underwent treatment yesterday, and we will have to wait and see. We still need to speak with the doctors and then see who will be available. Min-jae Kim and Alexander Pavlovich are definitely closer to recovery.'

Dr. Humalo takes on a new challenge in football, becoming deputy chairman of the SAFA technical committee

Dr. Humalo was long considered an exemplar of South African football due to his high-level talent, charismatic screen presence, and deep analysis on SABC Sport, making him the embodiment of a 'complete football personality.'

However, the time has come for Humalo to move beyond being just a representative of football. His appointment as the new deputy chairman of the SAFA technical committee marks a new chapter and possibly the most significant role in his post-playing career.

The technical committee operates under the auspices of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which oversees the association's administrative structures, including Chief Executive Director Lidia Monyepao and President Danny Jordan.

The primary task of the technical committee is to appoint national team coaches, implement training methodologies, and conduct comprehensive reviews of the teams' performances.

The committee, led by Chairman Jack Maluleke alongside Humalo, supervises Technical Director Molefi Ntseki, as well as all national team tacticians, including Bafana Bafana coach Pitsos Mosimane and Banyana Banyana head coach Desire Ellis.

Given the high caliber of the coaching staff, Humalo has the opportunity to work with a team of competent, successful, and experienced coaches.

Although he may not have the same accolades, Humalo holds coaching qualifications and previously served as a technical director at Baroka FC, albeit briefly.

Nevertheless, in his post-playing career, the experience Humalo gained as a player during his prime will likely be the most valuable. His mission is not to find the next Dr. Humalo, but to ensure that the talents of the past, present, and future receive the necessary support to develop and thrive.

There is widespread dissatisfaction regarding the lack of former players in SAFA structures, and this is valid. While their playing experience may differ, the knowledge and expertise they have accumulated over the years can positively influence the current and next generation of athletes, as the fundamentals of football remain constant.

Recognizing that players earn significantly more than in the past, support for developing a complete footballer goes beyond salary. Before players can take to the field, they need support in maintaining their well-being both at home and on the training pitch.

Development structures exist within SAFA not arbitrarily; they are designed to identify, develop, and nurture the best talents for South African football. Therefore, the specific needs of players must be met at every stage of their development.

This new role will require Humalo to be open to learning and flexible in adapting to circumstances, as a hasty approach could undermine his efforts. However, he is supported by mentors among the chairmen of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates—Kaizer Moutanga and Irvine Khoza.

This week, Humalo visited Moutanga to secure his support following the new appointment. This was an encouraging step in the right direction, considering Moutanga played a crucial role in shaping his career and remains one of the most respected visionaries in South African sports and entertainment.

Moutanga stated on the club's website: 'The Doctor understands the game very well. He will bring everything he developed throughout his career, spanning many years as a player and a coach, into the SAFA structures. We wish him all the best and hope to have a longer meeting with him in the next couple of weeks.'

Having also received an honorary doctorate from Tshwane University of Technology earlier this year, Humalo enters this field with significant backing. It is time for this South African icon to step out of the studio spotlight and contribute to significant progress behind the scenes.
