Residents of South Africa can expect varied weather on Tuesday: in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Eastern Cape, strong storms, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding are forecast, according to data from the South African Weather Service.
Although some inland provinces predict warm or hot weather, the eastern half of the country will be characterized by cloudiness and scattered showers.
People in areas where severe weather warnings have been issued are advised to remain vigilant, as thunderstorms may bring damaging winds, hail, excessive lightning, and localized inundations.
Severe Weather Warnings for KZN and Eastern Cape
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 impact-based yellow warning for strong thunderstorms over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Heavy downpours, destructive winds, hail, and lightning could lead to the flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas. There is a possibility that some bridges and roads may become impassable, and damage to infrastructure, property, vehicles, and livestock is possible.
A Level 2 yellow warning has been issued for western KwaZulu-Natal, warning of localized flooding and damage to settlements and infrastructure due to strong thunderstorms. Additionally, a separate Level 2 yellow warning is in effect along the coast and in the adjacent inland area of Cape St Francis regarding destructive precipitation, indicating the possibility of local flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements.
Gauteng
Gauteng is expected to have partly cloudy and warm weather on Tuesday, although temperatures will be high in the north. Isolated rains and thunderstorms are forecast, which may cause brief precipitation in some places. The probability of rain is around 30 percent, and storms are likely to remain isolated rather than widespread. Residents should also pay attention to the high ultraviolet radiation index, especially during warmer hours of the day.
Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga is expected to have partly cloudy and warm weather with isolated rains and thunderstorms across the province. Scattered storms are forecast in the eastern parts, where cloudy conditions are likely to persist. The chance of rain ranges from about 30 percent in areas with isolated rain to 60 percent in zones expecting more active storm activity. Strong thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, hail, intense lightning, and strong gusty winds may occur in the Lowveld and escarpment areas. Extremely hot conditions are also expected in some parts of Mpumalanga's Lowveld. Residents should exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.
Limpopo
In northern Limpopo, clear weather is forecast in the morning, followed by partly cloudy skies in other areas. Temperatures will range from hot to very hot, with isolated daytime rains and thunderstorms expected. The overall probability of precipitation is about 30 percent in areas with isolated storms, although eastern areas may face a higher likelihood of thunderstorms. Extremely high temperatures are expected in the south-central parts and in the Lowveld of Limpopo. Residents are advised to maintain hydration, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods, and monitor weather changes.
North West and Free State
The North West is expected to have partly cloudy skies, with morning rains in the northeastern territories before the weather becomes clear, windy, and hot. The probability of rain is about 30 percent in areas expecting isolated showers. The Free State will also start the day with partly cloudy skies and morning rains in the eastern sections. Later in the day, the weather should become clear, windy, and warm, with the probability of further precipitation outside the eastern zones decreasing. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in most areas of the North West and northern parts of the Free State. Residents are strongly urged to avoid actions that could trigger wildfires, especially given that warm and windy weather can promote rapid fire spread.
Western Cape
In the Western Cape, clear and warm weather is expected in the west, while the rest of the province will be cloudy. Isolated morning rains are possible along the eastern part of the southern coast. The probability of rain is about 30 percent in areas where isolated rains are forecast, with most of the province expected to remain dry. Moderate southerly or southwesterly winds are expected along the coast. The ultraviolet radiation index will be extreme, and residents are advised to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Fire Danger and Precautions
Despite the expected rainfall in the eastern parts of the country, extremely high fire danger is forecast in most areas of the North West, northern Free State, and the Limpopo valley. The public should refrain from open fires and other activities that could ignite dry vegetation. Residents in thunderstorm-prone areas should secure unsecured outdoor items, stay indoors during severe lightning, and avoid being under trees during storms. Drivers are strongly advised to reduce speed in heavy rain, avoid flooded roads, and never attempt to cross overflowing bridges.
