Gold prices fall in UAE before Diwali and Dhanteras, prompting buyers to opt for coins and lighter jewelry

Due to the correction in gold prices ahead of the Diwali and Dhanteras festivals, residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are considering purchasing coins, investing in lighter jewelry, or cashing out unused items from their vaults, as the approaching festive season once again increases interest in precious metals.

Some view the price decrease compared to previous months as an opportunity to make their annual festive purchase at a more favorable price. Others closely monitor market dynamics, comparing buyback policies and deciding whether to exchange old jewelry for new.

Industry insiders note that the combination of festive sentiment and recent price fluctuations influences buying and selling decisions, while demand for purchases traditionally rises during this period.

Rishi Vaya from SellYourGold.ae stated that significant price adjustments elicit varied reactions from sellers and buyers. Those who expected a price peak might rush to sell, while others prefer to hold onto gold awaiting a recovery in value.

He added that buyers are always ready to act when prices drop, as lower rates present an obvious opportunity, and strong buyer interest is currently observed in the market.

As Diwali, Dhanteras, and Christmas approach, Vaya noted that consumers who were contemplating a purchase find the current market conditions attractive.

For jewelry businesses, the change in price levels also prompts customers to be more mindful of spending. Amrin Iqbal, founder of Piece of You Jewellery, reported that some consumers decide to monetize jewelry they no longer wear, while others direct this value toward smaller purchases or more versatile designs.

Iqbal emphasized: 'When gold prices are high, we see people becoming more price-sensitive. Many decide to monetize items in their vaults, while others direct this value towards a smaller purchase or lighter, more versatile designs.'

Buyers are also exercising greater caution. Iqbal added that they compare rates, inquire about buyback policies, and view gold as a long-term asset rather than a quick purchase.

Before the start of the festive season, she noted that the cultural significance of gold continues to influence purchasing decisions, even when consumers opt for more modest items. 'We are also seeing strong interest in coins, bars, and light everyday jewelry.'

Meanwhile, Vaya advised residents planning to trade in old jewelry to closely monitor transaction structure. He warned: 'The strongest advice is to consolidate both transactions with the same jeweler. Selling for cash and buying elsewhere creates two separate transactions, each effectively incurring double losses due to its own margin.'

He also strongly recommended that consumers understand how gemstone jewelry is appraised and how purity differences affect the final offer. 'Additional considerations include the appraisal of gemstone jewelry, the impact of purity differences on the final offer, and ensuring you deal with a buyer who can provide full transparency in their valuation methodology.'

However, for many UAE residents, buying gold during Diwali is connected to something more than just market timing. The tradition of acquiring precious metal at an auspicious time remains an important part of their celebration.

Manju Arora said that she tries to buy gold every year during Dhanteras but is considering a different type of investment this time. She explained: 'Diwali or Dhanteras is an auspicious time to buy gold, and I try to buy something every year. This time I am considering buying several gold coins because they are easier to store, and it is also a good investment for the future.'

Bhavya Rao also tracks price movements before making a purchase, although she leans towards choosing lighter jewelry. She stated: 'Since gold prices fluctuate, I monitor the rates before making a purchase. I would prefer to buy light jewelry for Diwali.'

For Rao, the annual purchase is also a way of preserving family traditions while living away from India. She added: 'I want to maintain this tradition with my family here in the UAE. I also consider gold a long-term investment, especially since I have two daughters. It might be useful in the future, whether for their weddings or education.'

Gold prices in Dubai fell by 10.75 dirhams in a month, bringing relief to investors ahead of Diwali

Gold prices in Dubai showed a decline on Wednesday morning, as the 24-karat version of the precious metal lost 2.5 dirhams this week and 10.75 dirhams over the last month, which provided relief for investors shortly before the Diwali festival.

At the opening of markets on Wednesday, 24K gold traded at 486.5 dirhams per gram, lower than the 489 dirhams recorded at the close of markets on Tuesday. Other varieties of yellow metal—22K, 21K, 18K, and 14K—traded at prices of 450.5, 432, 370.25, and 288.75 dirhams per gram, respectively.

Globally, the spot price of gold dropped by 0.66 percent, reaching $4034.46 per ounce according to UAE time at 9:40 AM. Silver also decreased by 0.98 percent, trading at $53.92 per ounce.

Ross Maxwell, Strategy Director at VT Markets, noted that demand for yellow metal continues to be supported by structural demand, including central bank purchases and geopolitical uncertainty.

Maxwell explained that the upcoming US midterm elections in November could create a more favorable environment if expectations of reduced fiscal expansion lead to lower yields and a weakening of the US dollar. He stated that this could strengthen gold's prospects beyond temporary demand for capital preservation around election day.

Nevertheless, he added that persistent inflation and tight Federal Reserve policy could keep real yields high, limiting gold's recovery. Maxwell believes that a more convincing bullish signal will appear if gold establishes higher highs while real Treasury yields and the DXY index decline simultaneously.

In Maxwell's view, the US midterm elections on November 3rd could be a significant catalyst for financial markets, as investors will assess how a potential shift in Congressional control will affect fiscal policy, inflation, and interest rates. However, the biggest market reaction may depend not on which party wins, but on how closely the result aligns with what investors already expected.

Gold prices in Dubai recovered after falling by more than 20 dirhams per gram in October

Gold prices in Dubai showed a recovery on Monday morning, following a decline of more than 20 dirhams per gram throughout October.

According to data from Dubai Jewellery Group, the price of 24-karat gold on Monday morning was 484.0 dirhams per gram, which is higher than the figure of 481.5 dirhams per gram recorded at the close of trading over the weekend. In early October, the 24K option traded at approximately 500 dirhams per gram.

Similarly, other varieties also opened with an increase at the beginning of the week: 22K, 21K, and 18K gold traded at prices of 448.25, 429.75, and 368.25 dirhams per gram, respectively. The most affordable option, 14K, continued to trade below 300 dirhams per gram on Monday, reaching the mark of 287.25 dirhams.

Spot gold rose by 0.38 percent, reaching $4013.86 per ounce. Silver traded at $199.26 per ounce, increasing by 0.28 percent.

Naeem Aslam, Director of Investments at Zaye Capital Markets, noted that gold is struggling to attract stable demand as a safe-haven asset despite escalating geopolitical uncertainty. He pointed out that President Donald Trump's statement that the United States is not negotiating with Iran, as well as his warning about possible imminent developments, heightened concerns about further military confrontation and energy supply disruptions.

Aslam added: 'The immediate problem for gold is that geopolitical tension generates competing market forces. Although conflict escalation usually prompts investors to seek shelter in bullion, rising oil prices can intensify inflationary expectations and increase the likelihood of maintaining high interest rates. This raises the opportunity cost of holding gold and makes the psychological support level of $4000 particularly important.'

On Monday morning, oil prices showed a downward trend after a strong rise last week. WTI and Brent crude oil traded at prices of $101 and $114.5 per barrel, respectively, falling by 2.18 percent and 1.89 percent.

Gold prices drop ahead of Dhanteras and Diwali festivals; rates for 18, 22, and 24 karat presented.

For those preparing to purchase gold for the Dhanteras and Diwali festivals, there is good news: gold prices have decreased before the start of the festivals. In India, demand for buying gold jewelry usually increases during this period, so the softening of prices may bring some relief to buyers.

However, the future movement of gold prices will depend on many global factors. Factors such as crude oil prices, tensions in the Middle East, and signals from the US Federal Reserve regarding interest rates can determine the trajectory of gold's movement.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), the price of 24-karat gold fell by 0.42% on October 20, reaching ₹1,47,300 for 10 grams. In the retail market in Delhi on October 20, the price of 22-karat gold was ₹13,505 per gram, and for 18-karat gold—₹11,052 per gram.

In the international market, the spot gold price dropped by 0.3%, reaching $4,128.92 per ounce. The American gold futures contract with December delivery also fell by 0.3%, amounting to $4,148.50 per ounce.

It is important to note that the mentioned prices reflect values during trading. The price buyers receive in stores may differ. On the domestic market, gold prices are also dependent on import duties, the dollar-to-rupee exchange rate, local demand, taxes, and jewelry manufacturing costs.

The main reason cited for the weakening of gold prices is the rise in crude oil prices. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, concerns about oil supplies intensified due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. The price of Brent Crude remains at a level higher than in the last five months.

It is reported that Yemen rebels supported by Iran announced attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy facilities, airports, and military bases on Monday.

Gold is considered an alternative asset for investment during periods of inflation and uncertainty; however, it does not generate regular income, unlike some investment instruments such as government bonds, which pay interest. Therefore, when an increase in interest rates is expected, income-generating instruments may become more attractive to investors, putting pressure on gold prices.

Investors are also closely monitoring the US Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 27-28. The Fed's stance on interest rates may determine the further volatility of gold prices. If the Fed's stance is less hawkish than expected, gold may gain support. However, if signs emerge that interest rates will remain high for a long time, this could increase pressure on prices.
