Cape Town Council approves two-season sponsorship of SA20 final worth 5 million rand

The Cape Town Council has approved a two-season sponsorship of the Betway SA20 final totaling 5 million rand. This amount is distributed between the 2026/27 period (2.5 million rand) and the 2028/29 period (another 2.5 million rand).

The decision was made at a special council meeting on Thursday, despite objections regarding commitments for the second year before the event's assessment and the city's financial status review. Furthermore, the council authorized the City Mobility Directorate to consider waiving parking permit fees and also approved the cancellation of tariffs for posters and rotating banners during the sponsorship period.

According to the report presented, the Betway SA20 final has become one of the most sought-after sporting events in the country, as all past finals were sold out.

Report highlights growing popularity of SA20

The report noted that the 2026 final attracted approximately 14,000 spectators at the Newlands Cricket Grounds stadium. For the entire 2026 tournament, 22 out of 34 scheduled matches were sold, demonstrating growth compared to 17 sold matches in the previous season. This consistent increase in attendance indicates the tournament's growing popularity and its ability to consistently attract a large audience.

The report also indicated that hosting the Betway SA20 final presents a significant opportunity for the city to strengthen its reputation as a leading destination for major sporting events, providing Cape Town with extensive international recognition.

Additionally, it was noted that Betway SA20 raised 590,000 rand to support community development initiatives, including grassroots cricket programs. However, the report specified that Betway SA20 will not be held in 2028 due to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 taking place in South Africa.

The report stated that the long-term support agreement would aid in the long-term planning and execution of the event.

Opposition questions long-term commitments

A council member from the Freedom Front Plus, Emre Uygun, stated that his party supports the sponsorship of 2.5 million rand for the 2026-27 fiscal year but expressed concern about making an additional decision to allocate 2.5 million rand for 2028-2029. Uygun noted that it is premature to decide on taxpayer spending more than two years in advance, as circumstances, budgets, and priorities may change.

He added that Cape Town taxpayers are already under significant financial pressure due to the ongoing rise in rates and tariffs. Uygun emphasized that while Cape Town urgently needs investment for tourism and economic growth, given the reported growth rate of only 0.6% in the first quarter of this year, taxpayer funds must be managed responsibly and spent wisely.

Parties discuss economic benefits

Uygun advised that the council could consider this proposal closer to the time of the event, evaluating the results of the 2026-27 event and studying the city's financial situation to determine if further sponsorship is justified.

Findle George from the ANC stated that his party recognizes the importance of major sporting events, such as the SA20 Cricket League finals, in promoting social cohesion, uniting people, showcasing Cape Town as a sporting destination, and contributing to tourism and economic activity. George warned that it is not enough to simply become a spectacular tourist destination where residents watch from the sidelines while economic opportunities are captured by established businesses and external service providers.

He also insisted that hosting the SA20 Cricket League finals should be an opportunity to ensure or promote inclusive local economic development. Yusuf Mohammed from the DA expressed understanding of the concerns regarding sponsorship. Mohammed noted that major events require two to three years of planning and attract professional organizers. He stated that it is not premature to allocate such funding now, at an early stage of planning, as financial aspects must be considered. He concluded that there are millions of people and hundreds of thousands of companies in Cape Town, and there should be no debate about how supporting events contributes to social good through sport.

Durban presented as host city for South Africa's bid for Olympic Games worth 500 billion rand

The city of Durban has been put forward as the main organizing city for an ambitious campaign to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games on African soil for the first time, either in 2036 or 2040.

The formal bid was submitted to the Olympic House in Johannesburg on Thursday. This was done by the current president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Lwandile Simelane, and the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gethon Mackenzie, after receiving approval from the national Cabinet.

This historic project, preliminarily valued at 500 billion rand, plans to utilize the existing infrastructure of the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums in three major urban centers. This approach fully complies with the strict criteria of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding sustainable development and economic efficiency.

South Africa joins a group of seven countries, including Qatar, India, Germany, and Turkey. SASCOC will conduct virtual presentations before the IOC Future Host Commission in November 2026. This will be followed by formal feasibility reviews concluding in March 2027, and the final vote for the host country in 2029.

R 980 million amusement park in Durban receives approval for development funding

Work to upgrade the Durban waterfront is gaining momentum following the announcement of the launch of the flagship Durban Amusement Park project next year. The eThekwini municipality reported that preparatory work on the project, valued at nearly one billion rand, will be completed in the first quarter of 2027, after which construction will begin.

The park's goal is to revitalize the Durban waterfront and enhance the city's tourism offering. It was previously reported that the development would be carried out in partnership with two Italian firms specializing in engineering solutions for entertainment complexes such as Ferrari World, Universal Studios, and Disneyland.

The development is planned for the site of the former Durban Funworld within the central beach area, contingent upon a long-term development agreement with the municipality. This project will restore a permanent attraction venue on the waterfront, which has been absent since the closure of Funworld.

The park is planned to feature numerous world-class attractions, an augmented reality zone, digital spaces, carefully selected retail, and a modernized amphitheater geared towards events. The combination of indoor and outdoor entertainment will allow the park to operate year-round, including evenings and days with poor weather.

The area, known as Golden Mile, already attracts over 17 million visitors for walks annually. The park is designed to encourage guests to stay longer, return more often, and spend more money in local hotels, restaurants, and other tourist enterprises.

This project is a central element of investments exceeding 2 billion rand directed towards the Durban waterfront, alongside the redevelopment of the Joe Kools areas and the modernization of the Elangeni and Maharani hotels. The municipality views these initiatives as the foundation of its long-term waterfront renewal strategy.

eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Shabha, emphasized that this project is crucial for improving the tourism experience on the waterfront and demonstrates the City's commitment to expanding tourism opportunities, encouraging visitors to stay longer and enjoy the diversity of Durban's attractions.

Democratic Liberal Congress (DLC) leader, Patrick Pillay, expressed support for the public-private partnership, which will transform the Durban waterfront into a 'wonderland of bright entertainment and activity' upon completion. He noted that full funding will be provided by the private sector, while the City will provide the land and existing infrastructure.

Pillay also pointed out that this initiative will create necessary jobs and stimulate the City's economy, turning the waterfront into a fantastic world of entertainment.

In a statement, the municipality announced that the long-awaited development on the waterfront has reached an advanced stage. The proposed family, industrial, and leisure development valued at R 980 million has received approval for project financing from the financial development institution. The municipality added that this approval is a critical step toward construction, as it confirms institutional confidence.

The funding will also cover legislative requirements and support detailed planning and technical aspects. This approval strengthens the City's position, highlighting alignment between the national government, the financial development sector, and the municipality.

The municipality clarified that after securing funding, the project has moved past the design phase and is currently undergoing technical planning. The statement indicated that legislative procedures would follow and are expected to last until the end of the first quarter of 2027, after which construction will commence.

The project has become one of the key pieces of tourism infrastructure supported by the National Tourism Department. It was selected as part of the department's 2026 project competition and presented by the City as an investment-ready project at the South African Tourism Investment Summit, ensuring national coverage.

The municipality forecasts that the implementation of the project will create approximately 1400 jobs in construction and operation sectors, with local small businesses being integrated into the park's supply chain.
