National Library of Spain presents exhibition dedicated to the work and influence of Camões

The National Library of Spain (BNE) is organizing an exhibition titled 'Camões. Life, Work, and Presence in Hispanic Culture,' which will be inaugurated by the heads of state of Portugal and Spain—President António José Seguro and King Felipe VI. The exhibition will be open to the public until February 14, 2027, with free admission.

During this period, visitors can explore the exhibition, which is based on works and collections held at the BNE. The institution described this exhibit as a 'fantastic and unique selection striving to honor the memory of one of the greatest writers of world literature.'

Among the exhibits are some of the first editions and first translations of 'Os Lusíadas' into Castilian, with most of the material belonging to the BNE itself. Additionally, items brought from various Portuguese institutions specifically for this exhibition will be displayed in Madrid, including the sole complete edition of 'Saudades da Terra' (written between 1586 and 1590) by Gaspar Frutuoso.

This copy, which arrived in Madrid from the Public Library and Regional Archive of Ponta Delgada in the Azores, was presented by Manuel de Morais Sarmiento Pizarro, a member of the exhibition's supervisory committee working at the Portuguese Embassy in Madrid. Works from Portugal donated by the Lisbon War Museum (works by José Malhoa) and the Lisbon Museum (the painting 'Death of Camões' by Francisco Augusto Metrassa) will also be shown at the BNE.

The BNE emphasizes that it 'preserves an important heritage about Portugal and its literary history' and invites the public to 'discover the culture and richness of the Portuguese people.' According to the BNE, through the presented artifacts and collections, Luís Vaz de Camões 'is presented as a product of the Iberian historical and cultural context and simultaneously as a source of inspiration for authors from both sides of the Atlantic.'

The exhibition is divided into four main sections. The curator, Professor and Doctor of Romance Philology Aurelio Vargas Dias-Toledo from Complutense University in Madrid, selected the works available at the BNE that are 'of the greatest significance for each core,' according to Manuel de Morais Sarmiento Pizarro.

The first section is dedicated to 'precursors and the historical-literary contextualization of Portugal.' The second section aims to demonstrate Camões' cultural environment, particularly 'classical, peninsular, and Italian works and authors who had some decisive influence' on Camões.

The third section focuses on 'Camões' literary world.' This is where visitors can see a selection of works by the Portuguese author held at the BNE, such as first editions or translations of 'Os Lusíadas' into Castilian. This section also includes other works by Camões, as well as the edited edition of 'Os Lusíadas' by Manuel de Faria and Sousa, published in Madrid in 1639, which highlighted the BNE as a 'significant moment in the canonization process of Camões in Castilian literature.'

The fourth section of the exhibition is dedicated to 'the projection of Luís de Camões in Hispanic culture' and includes a selection of works from the 'Hispanic literary world' by authors such as Rosalía de Castro, Francisco Villaspas, and Jorge Luis Borges.

According to the BNE, the exhibition concludes with the Spanish writer Antonio Muñoz Molina, author of the book 'A Solitary Walk Among People,' whose title is taken from the poem 'É um andar solitário entre a gente' from the sonnet 'Love is a fire that burns without being seen' by Camões.

The exhibition 'Camões. Life, Work, and Presence in Hispanic Culture' is the result of cooperation between the Government of Portugal and the BNE (which is under the supervision of the Spanish Ministry of Culture). It is part of the program developed within the framework of the Mission Structure for the centenary of the birth of Luís de Camões, scheduled for the period 2024–2026. The involved bodies consider this exhibition a 'culmination' and hope to 'complete with a golden key' the international program of these celebrations.

Exhibition in Dili presents 30 works of Portuguese literature and stimulates discussion about missing books

The exhibition, featuring 30 works of Portuguese literature, was organized by curator Maria Joan Branco from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the New University of Lisbon. This initiative was conceived a year earlier by the Portuguese Embassy in Dili, headed by Duarte Bué Alves.

The exhibition is titled 'Inventory Stripped Bare on Your Soul — 30 Classics of Portuguese Literature,' inspired by a line from the poet Rui Sintati, who lived in Timor-Leste between 1946 and 1947, and again from 1951 to 1955 before returning in 1966, after which he was forbidden from returning to Salazar's island.

Maria Joan Branco explained to Lusa that the main goal of the exposition is to provoke a discussion about Portuguese literature, as well as to re-evaluate and revive the history of Portuguese literature. She emphasized that although the exhibition is structured chronologically, the idea is that the works should not remain prisoners of their era; on the contrary, the past has a future, and this is an exercise in freedom that allows for the reinterpretation and recreation of what we today call classics, while also serving as 'a tribute to the Portuguese language.'

The exhibition includes contemporary works of art, such as music by composer João Madureira, a short film by João Cesar Monteiro about Sofia de Mello Breyner, and poetry recitation by Herbert Calder Louis Miguel Sintra.

The curator stated that, in her opinion, these elements help 'revitalize a language that is actually a living organism, and we bear the responsibility and freedom to do this constantly.'

The exhibition covers 800 years of Portuguese literary history, starting from 'Cantigas de Amigo' and ending with Gonçalo M. Tavares' 'Uma Viagem à Índia' (A Journey to India). The Portuguese Ambassador noted that the presented list is only one of many possibilities, as every person reflecting on this will create their own list.

Duarte Bué Alves reported that they aim to challenge and start a discussion so that visitors leave the exhibition feeling dissatisfied because a book by author A, B, or C is missing, or because their favorite book is X, Y, or Z. He stressed that the main thing is to encourage people to analyze what they have read and what they can read.

All exhibited books are available for viewing at the Portuguese Cultural Center library. The exhibition, which opened on Wednesday with the participation of Timor's President, José Ramos-Porto, has already received hundreds of visitors, including schoolchildren from various educational institutions. The Portuguese Ambassador added that he considers the goal achieved if there is any dialogue about the significance of these books or this list in Timorese schools.

The exhibition will be open to the public throughout November, and at the end of the visit, visitors can write down the name of the missing book and author on a special board.

Municipal Libraries of São Paulo Host Free Literary Clubs and Author Meetings

The municipal libraries of São Paulo are organizing a free program this week that includes literary clubs and meetings with writers. The events cover collective reading of contemporary Brazilian literature, discussions on racism and social inequality, as well as a sarau combining poetry, music, and skateboarding.

One of the main events is a meeting with writer Aline Bei, author of the book 'O peso do pássaro morto'. This meeting is scheduled for Wednesday (the 28th) at 7:00 PM at the Mário de Andrade Library in the city center. During the personal conversation, the author's literary journey and her work will be discussed.

The event is part of the 'Encontro com os Escritores' project, implemented by the University of Books and the Unesp Publishing House. Aline Bei, a graduate of the Literature Faculty at the Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), presented her first novel 'O peso do pássaro morto', which received the São Paulo Literature Award and the Toka Award, and was a finalist for the Rio Literature Award. In 2021, she released 'Pequena coreografia do adeus', which was a finalist for the Jabuti and São Paulo Literature Awards. The event will take place in the Rubens Borba de Moraes Auditorium, on the first floor of the Mário de Andrade Library, located at Consolação Street, 94, in the Center, and has a free age classification.

The Teresa de Benguela Literary Club holds meetings at the Mário de Andrade Library for the joint reading of excerpts from Lilia Guerra's novel 'Céu para bastardos'. This novel tells the story of Sá Narine, a resident of the fictional periphery Fim-do-mundo, who works in a middle-class family in the Center. The work touches upon the heroine's daily life and issues of social inequality.

The meetings are scheduled for Wednesday (the 28th) at 3:00 PM and Thursday (the 29th) at 6:00 PM in the Multifunctional Hall of the Mário de Andrade Library, located at Consolação Street, 94, in the Center. It is not necessary to read the book in advance, as the excerpts will be read collectively during the event. The recommended age is 14 years.

The novel 'Torto Arado' by Itamar Vieira Junior is the theme of the Ressaca Literária club, which organizes meetings for book discussions and the exchange of interpretations among participants. The work tells the story of sisters Bibiana and Belonísia in the Sertão of Bahia, raising issues such as racism, the fight for land, and modern slavery.

The meeting is scheduled for Saturday (the 31st) at 2:00 PM at Sítio da Ressaca, located at Nadra Raffoul Mocodsi Street, 3, in the South Zone of São Paulo. The event will be moderated by Bianca Mariano, Gabi Nunes, and Gabriel Gonzaga and is held in partnership with the Paul Duarte Library.

In the Guianães Cultural House Zones, a 'Literatura das Ruas' sarau is held on Saturday (the 31st) at 4:00 PM with the participation of the Love CT Collective. This event combines music, poetry, and skateboarding, using literature as a platform for self-expression and experience sharing among the local community. It will take place on Castelo de Lesa Street, without a number, in Guianães, and admission is free.

Those who wish to view the program can use the BiblioSP Digital platform, a free resource provided by the São Paulo City Hall, which offers access to e-books for reading on mobile phones or computers. The platform also offers audiobooks and reading personalization tools.
