Punjab Kings may release several players to free up budget ahead of IPL 2027 under Preeti Jinta's leadership

Following a disappointing performance by Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025, where the team led by Shreyas Iyer failed to make the playoffs, the management and its co-owner Preeti Jinta are preparing for major changes before the IPL 2027 mini-auction.

According to available information, to optimize the budget and form a new squad, Punjab Kings may release five players who have performed poorly.

One such player is Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, whom the club acquired for a substantial 11 crore. However, in 26 matches, he managed to score only 376 runs and take 3 wickets. Since the team has an excellent alternative in Ajmuttaullah Omarzai, Stoinis's departure is considered almost inevitable.

There is also consideration of releasing Nehal Wadhera, who joined the team for 4.20 crore. His performance in IPL 2026 was extremely poor: in 8 matches, he scored only 65 runs, and as a result of his poor form, he was dropped from the starting lineup. Now the club intends to release him before the auction.

Furthermore, New Zealand fast bowler Loki Ferguson might leave the team. Due to injuries and personal reasons, he played only in 7 matches over two seasons, despite having a relatively high efficiency rating, taking only 6 wickets. The fragment indicates that the franchise may get rid of him to save its expensive bowling budget.

Indian young batter Mushir Khan, bought by Punjab for 30 lakhs, got a chance to play in only one match over the last two seasons. Mushir himself seems intent on leaving the team to try and find a spot at the auction.

Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis was acquired for a significant sum of 4.40 crore, but in IPL 2026, he only got one match, in which he took just one wicket. Considering the presence of strong foreign bowlers like Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett, Punjab may decide to release Dwarshuis.

WPL 2027 Auctions Start in Kochi: 150 Players and 27 Slots Among Five Teams

The mini-auction for the Women's Premier League (WPL 2027) is set to begin soon in Kochi. Following last month's retention of 63 players and a major trade deal, five franchises now face the task of filling a total of 27 vacant spots, seven of which are reserved for international players.

All teams have a combined budget of 8.15 crore rupees for this auction, featuring 150 players (including 28 international players and players from 6 affiliated countries). Although most teams have already formed their core squads, and the auction is aimed only at filling gaps, prominent names such as Sneha Rana, Chamari Attapattu, Sophia Dunkley, and Sophie Molinks will be available, capable of drastically changing any team's profile.

Financial Status and Team Composition

Among the teams, UP Warriors will enter with the largest budget—3.75 crore rupees—and eight open slots. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians, the two-time champion, has the most modest remaining budget—only 90 thousand rupees—and needs to fill six positions. Now it remains to be seen which player will receive the highest bid and which franchise will emerge victorious.

Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka excluded from squad ahead of Pakistan matches due to injury

The Sri Lankan national team has suffered a significant blow just before the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan. Star opener Pathum Nissanka was unable to fully recover from a hamstring injury, resulting in his exclusion from the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series against Pakistan.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board officially confirmed this decision. Initially, Pathum Nissanka was included in the starting lineup conditional on receiving medical clearance, but he did not recover in time.

He was previously absent from the T20 series against Pakistan, as well as the ODI three-series between England and host nation Pakistan. Following Nissanka's exclusion, Lahiru Udara was included in the squad.

Lahiru Udara was already in Pakistan with limited Sri Lankan teams for the ODI three-series. It is worth noting that in 2026, Udara demonstrated outstanding performance in the WTC series against the West Indies, scoring his best career Test score of 188 runs.

The Sri Lankan team, under the leadership of Kusal Mendis, will commence this two-match Test series against Pakistan on November 9th at the Rawalpindi Stadium. The second and final match of the series will take place on November 17th at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Although Nissanka's absence is a setback for Sri Lanka's batting order, it provides Udara with an excellent opportunity to prove his worth.

The updated Sri Lankan squad includes Kusal Mendis (captain), Anjali Bhandara, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya D Silva, Sonal Dinusha, Asitha Fernando, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumar, Dilshan Madushanka, Eshan Malinga, Chamindu Mendis, Kesara Nuwanta, Milan Ratnaka, Pasindu Suriyabanda, and Lahiru Udara.

The first Test is scheduled from November 9th to 13th in Rawalpindi, and the second Test will be held from November 17th to 21st in Lahore.
