Stormers defeat Ulster in URC match despite in-game errors

Despite a game full of mistakes, the Stormers team managed to secure five points by defeating Ulster 33:7 in the United Rugby Championship (URC) match held in Cape Town.

Goals and scoring moments

Although the result satisfied the team, issues with ball handling and careless play overshadowed the rare attacking moments the players managed to create. Thanks to dominance in scrums and mauls, the Stormers proved significantly stronger than their guests, even despite the large number of errors they committed.

This victory allows the team to remain among the top four in the tournament and maintain an unbeaten run at the DHL Stadium, but before the November break, they need to improve their play, especially in attack and ball handling.

Goals and scoring moments

Captain Rohan Nel scored the fourth try in the corner after a brilliant cross-field kick from flyhalf Yakin Ahmed. However, there was a fight for bonus points beforehand, as second-half errors almost repeated those from the first forty minutes.

In the first half, the Stormers occasionally displayed forgotten football. They passed the ball as if it were a hot potato; there were many handling errors from experienced players, and they failed to capitalize on the advantage provided by their physical play. Although the Cape Town team led 12:7 at halftime thanks to tries from forwards J. De Schikkenling and winger Paul de Villiers, the overall level of play was lower than expected.

The second half brought no significant changes. When eighth player Evan Russ crossed the line for a try after an unsuccessful Ulster kick-out, running over 70 meters, the number of errors continued to rise, and Ulster gained most of the possession. Nevertheless, the Stormers' defensive actions saved the team a couple of times, preventing several Ulster scores right at the goal line, while the home team kept a clean sheet in the second half.

Ahmed also became a scorer towards the end of the match, finishing a magnificent attack that began with a dominant scrum. He beat two defenders after winger Seabelo Senatla created problems for the defense with his side movement.

Currently, few teams can match the strength of the Stormers' physical elements, and this has been their salvation when everything else went wrong. Nevertheless, the Cape Town team will be concerned about Russ's injuries, who left the field limping, as well as the injury to winger Leolani Zasa, who was replaced after sustaining an injury.

Despite difficulties in completely dominating Ulster, the Stormers will take the win and prepare for the challenging December period in the URC and Champions Cup.

Who scored the points

The Stormers' score was 33 (12), including tries from J. De Schikkenling, Paul de Villiers, Evan Russ, Rohan Nel, and Yakin Ahmed. Ahmed made 4 conversions. Ulster's score was 7 (7), including a try by Dave McCann and a conversion by Jack Murphy.

Rohan Nel warns of Ulster's danger as Stormers aim to strengthen weak defense

Stormers captain and defensive organizer, Rohan Nel, will return to the squad on Saturday for the United Rugby Championship (URC) match against Ulster in Cape Town. Nel was absent from the previous two games—one in the Champions Cup and one in the URC—but his return is scheduled before the international break in November.

Despite Nel's absence, the Cape Town team achieved impressive victories over Bristol Bears and Scarlets over the last two weekends. However, after these two matches, the team's defense came under serious criticism.

Although the Stormers managed brilliantly to limit Bristol to only two touchdowns, the Scarlets' attack repeatedly found open spaces on the flank of the defense, scoring six five-point tries. Three of these goals were scored by winger Joe Roberts, who effectively penetrated the center of the field and utilized the space on the sides.

Nel's return is intended to add defensive solidity to the Stormers' midfield, but he warned that Ulster presents a difficult opponent. He will play alongside Marcus Muller, who was named in the starting lineup on Friday following Jonathan Roche's injury.

Nel stated: 'We have never had easy matches against Ulster, whether at home or in Belfast.' He added that despite rumors that Ulster lost eight or nine of its original international players, new players are making efforts to secure starting positions. He noted that experienced players, such as James Hume at 13 years old and John Quinn at scrum-half, bring a lot of leadership to the field. Nel emphasized: 'We certainly will not underestimate the players they have recruited. Their team is no weaker; on the contrary, I think these guys strengthen it even more.'

Ulster is currently in 13th place in the URC table without a win, which motivates them to achieve a sensation in the final match of the round, as they have nothing to lose. This makes them a potentially dangerous opponent.

The danger that the Stormers felt from the Scarlets should serve as a sufficient warning for the home side. Nel noted: 'I don't look at them in the table, if you can say so. If you look at how Ulster played in recent weeks, everything is going their way right now. They had two consecutive draws, and they almost beat the Bulls in Loftus. They didn't win, but if they hadn't dropped the ball at the end, the result could have been different.' He concluded: 'This is an important match for us. We played in Belfast last year closer to the end of the season, so we definitely know what awaits us on Saturday.'

Stormers defeat Scarlets in URC despite crisis due to injuries to all three hookers

The Stormers team managed to defeat the Scarlets with a score of 52-40 in the Whitefield Rugby Championship (URC) match held on Saturday. However, Rugby Director John Dobson admitted that losing all three hookers during the game created a serious crisis for the Cape-based team.

Despite the home team securing bonus points at the DHL stadium, they had to face an unusual problem after all their specialized hookers were injured, which left the team without options for positional control.

Dobson had prepared contingency plans for the loss of two hookers, but he never anticipated a scenario where all three would be unavailable during the contest. This is exactly what happened when Andre-Ugo Winter, Dion Fury, and young Lukahno Wokozela sustained injuries.

Dobson commented on the injuries, noting: 'I try to avoid commenting on having a crisis, but it's hard not to mention it, isn't it? I agree with you about the word 'strange'—it was absolutely strange.' He expressed great gratitude to captain Paul de Villiers and his team for maintaining composure in a difficult situation.

He added: 'I really liked it because I had a good backup plan in case we lost both hookers, but I never thought about losing three, you see? Dion was the third, so losing three hookers leaves us with no options for set-piece play. It is a crisis. But I am grateful for how they finished this game.'

Dobson provided further information on the injured players, clarifying that their protective pads flew out like pinball. According to him, eighth player Hajiva Daimani definitely cannot feature in the next match against Ulster. Wokozela must undergo a second Head Injury Assessment (HIA) before being cleared to play, however, scrum-half Kobus Reinhart and winger Seabelo Senatla passed the relevant HIA tests. Winter, he said, suffered a relatively serious elbow injury, and Fury damaged his hamstring.

'It was not the best day for us in terms of injuries,' he concluded. If Wokozela passes the second HIA test, he can play alongside Vernon Paulo. However, if he is ruled out, Dobson reported that they might have to look for a temporary replacement. Another Stormers hooker, J.J. Kotze, remains suspended following a high tackle.

Dobson also expressed regret over his team's weak defense but praised the Scarlets for how they fought in their style of play. The Stormers mentor added that at halftime, 'there was little hope for them,' as his team was leading 33-14. Nevertheless, he noted that the Scarlets' style of play deserved respect, as they began to gain hope after the break. He emphasized that the team was not direct enough, and in the past, such moments could lead to a loss. He urged the team not to become too complacent because they might not be playing against one of the top URC teams or if it is not a local derby, insisting that such trends must be stopped.

Stormers secure convincing victory over Bristol Bears in Champions Cup

The Stormers team began its Champions Cup campaign with a bonus point-earning victory over Bristol Bears. The match took place in Cape Town on Saturday at the DHL Stadium, where Stormers secured a confident win with a score of 49:12, scoring seven points.

This was the second consecutive victory for the team known as 'Men in Black,' and they continued their impressive form following their previous win against Sharks last week. Despite several bright moments, including the first touchdown by winger Seabelo Senatla, the game was marred by a red card for hooker J.J. Kotze and a yellow card for winger Leonel Zas.

Although the team, which includes Springbok players, played with fourteen men for twenty minutes and then with thirteen, the home side possessed enough power to send the Bears back to England with no league points.

Stormers' Strengths

While the backline attacks showed excellent form, especially in the first three touchdowns, including Senatla's try, the Stormers deserve praise for their defense. They repeatedly stopped Bears attacks right before the try line, with forward Siya Kolisi anchoring the strong defense in the center. Tackles from D. De Shikkerling and Andre Smith also disrupted Bristol's play in the outsides during their attacks.

Kotze's red card in the 22-meter zone while defending a rolling maul created additional pressure on the hosts. However, after the subsequent play in the outfields, Kolisi managed to knock the ball away from an attacking player.

Although the red card strengthened Stormers' defense, Senatla's touchdown in the seventh minute showed that the attack would develop. He broke through the defense, bypassed the last defender, and dived in the corner.

Good attacking play from fullback Damian Willemse and Senatla led to five points for Zas. He received a ground pass from his wing partner and scored without facing resistance.

Bears were only able to score points against the weakened home team in the second half, receiving a second card, this time yellow, for Zas's high tackle. The yellow card was issued after a tackle attempt by midfielder Kobus Reinach was disallowed. Stormers expressed dissatisfaction with this card, as the attacker fell onto Zas, but the TMO and referee deemed the tackle dangerous.

However, shortly after the Bears' touchdown maul, Roach scored his second try of the day, sending the ball into the corner after catching a high cross-pass from winger Sachi Feinberg-Mngomezulu and running into the goal.

The match slowed down slightly when Stormers started making substitutions, although they still maintained most of possession, and their defensive play in the chaos held Bristol at bay several times.

The tries scored by substitutes Warrick Gelant, #16 Andre-Hugo Venter, and Zas, who scored his second, after prolonged attacks brought a bonus point when they took the lead over Bristol by a three-point margin. Feinberg-Mngomezulu demonstrated impeccable finishing ability with crosses, converting all five-point opportunities and missing only one penalty before halftime.

In addition to disciplinary issues, Stormers' play was also let down several times by handling errors, including obvious dropped balls, such as when Willemse dropped the ball in an open area near the try line in front of him. Sometimes they also kicked the ball unnecessarily wide.

Nevertheless, these are minor flaws that can be corrected over the next few weeks. The scrums, rolling mauls, defense, and attack looked polished for most of the match, and the first victory in the Champions Cup will be a cause for celebration.

Who Scored Points

Stormers 49 (21): Tries: Seabelo Senatla, Leonel Zas (2), Jonathan Roach (2), Warrick Gelant, Andre-Hugo Venter. Conversions: Sachi Feinberg-Mngomezulu (7).

Bristol Bears 12 (7): Tries: Joe Owen, Sol Moody. Conversion: Sam Horsley.
