Sean Bartlett explained why the Soweto Derby holds special significance

Former Kaiser Chiefs forward Sean Bartlett warned that recent team form is irrelevant before the Soweto Derby, calling the historic clash between Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates too unpredictable to forecast.

Commenting on the unique atmosphere of this iconic South African match, the former Bafana Bafana international striker emphasized that strong emotions and the fight for local supremacy regularly overturn expectations on the field.

Bartlett stated: 'I always say that when it comes to a derby, form and guide fly out the window.' He added that 'there are many emotions here. It is a matter of Soweto pride. And sometimes you can see a team that might not be in form, but comes into this game and sometimes achieves results. So, honestly, I think it's a difficult match to predict.'

Having previously spent six seasons in the English Premier League with Charlton Athletic before moving to Chiefs, Bartlett noted that stepping onto the pitch in front of a packed FNB stadium presents a completely different psychological challenge compared to standard league matches.

He explained: 'The key is the crowd. In other games, you probably never get close to 80,000 or 90,000 spectators.' Continuing the topic, he said that 'when it comes to the Soweto Derby and playing against the Pirates, both clubs face much more pressure. Representing the crest is a huge honor, regardless of who you are or where you come from.'

Bartlett recalled his first match where he scored a goal, noting that it gave him a certain authority. He also observed that 'when you score in a derby, fans start treating you a little sooner.'

Three Orlando Pirates fans made a long and costly trip to the Soweto derby

The journey to the Soweto derby proved challenging for three dedicated supporters of the Orlando Pirates team. Dumisani Mgabi reported in a video clip, while stuck in a long traffic jam, that he, Sakhele Mtethwa, and Bafana Mtendjwa were delayed for over an hour on the way to the iconic match scheduled for Saturday at the FNB Stadium.

Despite the difficult route to Johannesburg via Piet Retief on a hot Friday, the three ardent fans did not lose enthusiasm. They not only enjoyed the nine-hour journey but also made several pleasant stops, admiring the scenic views of the Mpumalanga province.

The Cost of Devotion

The trip for this trio cost them approximately 2700 rand per one-way journey to their destination. Furthermore, they planned to spend 2400 rand each on accommodation at the Ecomotel in Park Station for three nights. They budgeted no less than 1500 rand for food over the weekend.

Mgabi, affectionately known as '3935', told IOL Sport that they have been following Pirates since the times of Brandon Silent and Helman Mkhalele. He emphasized that they travel everywhere to support the team, and that the club does not provide them with money; they do it out of love for the symbolism, entertainment, and because Pirates brings them joy.

Traveling Across Borders and Provinces

Mtethwa, who owns the car they used, lives in Richards Bay and was supposed to pick up Mgabi and Mtendjwa in Mutubatuba before they headed to Johannesburg. Since these two locations are more than 50 kilometers apart, this adds another leg to the journey. However, as Mgabi noted, it is all worth it.

Mgabi recounted that Mtethwa travels a great distance to pick them up. After that, they fill up a full tank of petrol and set off. He added that they do this out of love for Pirates and want their children to know that their fathers supported Pirates. They have traveled across the country and beyond, including Botswana, to support the team.

Daily Work Funds the Passion

Supporting Pirates both domestically and continentally has become a routine for these three fans. They are grateful for their work and for the support and understanding they receive at home. Mgabi explained that he is involved in buying and selling cars, Mtendjwa works as an electrician, and Mtethwa earns in Mbonambi by selling blocks and river sand. It is thanks to this that they can travel across the country. He also noted that even their partners know that they are fanatic Pirates supporters and understand it.

Loyalty Through Wins and Losses

These fans are not naive and do not expect the team to win every match. Earlier this month, they met the team before the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where they sang and were near the players, so they were naturally disappointed by the 2-0 loss. Nevertheless, they understand the nature of the game, so they are satisfied with the team's efforts in all trials and difficulties.

Mgabi stated that regardless of whether they win, draw, or lose, they will always be behind the team. Even when Pirates loses, they always come to dance with them on the center line. They realize that the result can be anything. He confidently stated that in the last three seasons, no team has played more attractive and better football than Orlando Pirates. Even in defeats, they are happy because the team plays beautiful local football. He added that even if you are worried about your wife at home, you forget about it when you are at the stadium watching the game.

Perhaps they have covered hundreds of kilometers, spent thousands of rand, and endured frustrating traffic jams, but for Mgabi, Mtethwa, and Mtendjwa, supporting Pirates remains a journey worth taking.

Viewers outraged by intimate scenes in the series 'Mahadev and Sans', accusing creators of romanticizing domestic violence

Following the broadcast of a controversial intimate scene between Diraj and Raji in the show 'Mahadev and Sans' on Colors TV, anger erupted among viewers on social media. Users claim that the series is attempting to normalize domestic violence by presenting it as romance.

A new promo for 'Mahadev and Sans' depicts romantic moments between Diraj and Raji. In a bedroom scene, Diraj removes his shirt and embraces Raji, demonstrating romance. These intimate shots in a family serial shocked viewers. One commentator called for the cessation of 'Mahadev and Sans,' while another preferred watching low-quality films. Some users expressed the opinion that modern family shows are no longer intended for family viewing, labeling such scenes indecent and low-brow.

The series had previously sparked controversy for allegedly promoting domestic violence under the guise of love. In one scene, Diraj stops Raji on the bed. Raji's hand touches a hot iron, and she screams in pain; afterward, Diraj covers her mouth and declares that he does not love her in his heart. Previously, Diraj was also seen hitting and pushing Raji.

After the video went viral, users stated that such behavior is not 'romantic tension' but violence and control. As the dispute intensified, Asim Khan, who plays Diraj, called it a 'misunderstanding' and stated that conclusions cannot be drawn without watching the entire episode. He explained that Raji was previously under the influence of drugs, and Diraj poured water on her, and the iron burn happened accidentally.

It remains to be seen what explanations the creators and actors will provide regarding these romantic scenes.

The upcoming Soweto Derby between Pirates and Chiefs promises to be a significant event in South African football

The forthcoming Soweto Derby, set to take place at the fully packed FNB Stadium, promises to be another defining moment in South African football. Two undefeated giants, whose rivalry spans over five decades, will meet in the match, with issues of security, pride, and points being central concerns.

The fixture between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, two of the country's most popular and highly supported teams, is scheduled for 15:30 at the FNB Stadium. Although the Chiefs hold a historical advantage, the Pirates are defending their Betway Premiership championship title and have shown better recent form in league encounters.

Both teams have avoided defeat this season, but the Pirates have proven significantly more effective at turning games into wins, making them favorites heading into the derby. Nevertheless, the previous meeting in April ended in a 1-1 draw, serving as a reminder of how quickly statistics and form can become irrelevant when these fierce rivals clash.

The Soweto Derby transcends a mere football match; it is a rivalry forged by generations, legendary players, and unforgettable events, supported by millions of fans whose devotion to either club runs deeper than the result of 90 minutes. The roots of this rivalry trace back to 1970, giving rise to a football spectacle filled with gripping stories, heroes, and villains.

Today's players inherit this tradition, bearing the responsibility of adding their names to the history of a rivalry that has witnessed the evolution of South African football across eras. Pirates and Chiefs enter the Saturday match without losses in the league, but their season starts suggest that the Buccaneers have more momentum. Pirates have won seven out of eight league matches and sit in second place, while Chiefs have secured three victories and drawn five, placing them fifth.

The teams also arrive with contrasting moods following their recent continental campaigns. Pirates secured a spot in the CAF Champions League group stage with a convincing victory over African Stars from Namibia. Meanwhile, Chiefs suffered a painful exit from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing to Red Arrows of Zambia on penalties.

It is expected that over 80,000 spectators will attend the Calabash Stadium, where generations of football passion will converge for an event that has become an integral part of South Africa's sporting and cultural identity. The atmosphere, rivalry, and emotional investment make this one of the biggest fixtures on the national football calendar. For Pirates, a win would strengthen their title chances and serve as further proof of an impressive start to the season. For Chiefs, it would be a statement result, narrowing the gap with their rivals and providing a timely response to those who consider them underestimated. Beyond the pitch, the derby carries another crucial task: ensuring the safety of tens of thousands of attending spectators.
