Brett Lee admits his only regret is not moving to Dubai sooner

Brett Lee, who defied doctors' warnings in his youth after a serious back injury to pursue his dream of fast bowling, has few regrets in life. Despite injuries continuing to plague him even after becoming an elite international cricketer, forcing him to miss major tournaments including the 2007 World Cup, he secured his place among the fastest players of all time and remained an important part of great Australian teams in the 2000s.

Approaching his 50th birthday, Lee, who now resides in Dubai, no longer has to wake up early for grueling training sessions. However, his ability to bring joy to others with a wide and bright smile remains unchanged. It was with this signature smile that he admitted his only regret in life is not having moved to these shores sooner.

Lee also fondly recalls playing moments with Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie, and the immortal Shane Warne. He has embraced his second chapter of life, enjoying domestic cricket with his children in Dubai. In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Lee discussed his connection with Play971, the first licensed betting and gaming platform in the UAE, his special bond with Indian fans, and an unforgettable moment with Andrew Flintoff, which became a powerful symbol of sportsmanship.

As an ambassador for Play971, Lee noted the historical significance of the platform as the only regulated venue for betting and gaming in the UAE. He emphasized that his life has always been built on enjoyment, fun, community, and honesty, aligning with Play971's values. He expressed pride in participating in such a historic project because they share the same moral principles.

Discussing potential collaborations, Lee explained that it took months of planning to ensure brand alignment. He believes that his life principle—honesty, an element of fun, engagement, and community among fans—perfectly matches what Play971 represents.

Lee also shared his experience of transitioning after retiring. He officially retired from cricket in 2015 after the Big Bash and played in Masters Leagues last year. He noted that the transition is difficult for elite athletes, but he managed it wonderfully. As he approaches 50, he recognizes the immense pressure sport puts on the body and decided to step away from cricket to continue playing domestic cricket with his children.

He highlighted the importance of participating in the KT Luxe Healthy Ageing Summit 2026, given the strong focus in the UAE and globally on healthy living and longevity. Lee aims to be a healthy adult entering the second stage of life, believing the goal is to live as long and as healthy as possible for his children.

The move from Australia to Dubai, which took place 15 months ago, was a big step for the whole family. Previously, the UAE was merely a transit point for him. However, a business opportunity brought him here, and he found that the environment in the UAE, especially in Dubai, is full of energy and safe. His children are happy in school, where they study with representatives from 200 different cultures and learn Arabic. Lee concluded that all these opportunities became possible because of his decision to move, which is why his only regret is not arriving here sooner.

Recalling early games in Australia with brothers Shane and Grant, Lee stated that although he was the least talented among them, he was the hungriest. He believes that hunger is the most important quality because it encompasses discipline, dedication, and self-sacrifice.

Regarding the back injury sustained at age 17, Lee mentioned that his doctors were predominantly of Indian origin. After being diagnosed with a complete fracture of the lower spine, which prohibited him from playing fast bowling, he, being young and determined, decided to play for Australia regardless. He declared he would bowl at 160 km/h and promised the doctor two tickets to his first Test match.

His debut match against India in Melbourne did indeed take place, and he kept his promise. Lee noted that his entire life was built around enjoyment and fun, and for him, that meant stepping onto the world stage as an athlete.

Through his lifestyle and connections, Lee built a strong relationship with Indian fans. He emphasized that off the field, he values friendship, and unlike some athletes, he knows how to separate professionalism on the field from humanity off it. He also noted that the move to Dubai strengthened his relationship with India, allowing him quick access to Mumbai, which would have been very arduous from Australia.
