The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced this Friday, the 30th, that the green tariff band will be maintained in November, ensuring that Brazilians will not have additional charges on their electricity bills.
This decision marks the second consecutive time the green band remains active, meaning consumers will not be burdened with extra fees resulting from the tariff band system on their electricity bill.
According to agency information, the continuation of the green band is due to favorable energy generation conditions. This scenario is driven by increased rainfall in the areas where the main hydroelectric plants are located.
With reservoirs showing a more balanced level, it becomes unnecessary to activate thermal power plants on a large scale, which generate energy at higher costs.
Previously, between May and September, the tariff band was classified as yellow, which implied an additional cost of R$ 1.88 for every 100 kWh consumed. In October, Aneel had already reduced the classification to green.
The tariff band system, created by Aneel, functions to inform consumers about the energy generation conditions in the country and the costs associated with its production.
When precipitation volume decreases, the levels of hydroelectric reservoirs can fall, which limits the generation capacity of these plants. At these times, it is necessary to resort to thermal power plants, which have higher operating costs.
To signal such situations and cover extra expenses, the agency uses distinct colored bands, which can result in supplementary charges on the electricity bill. With the green band maintained in November, consumers will not face these increases on their energy bill.
