The media and entertainment platform JioStar reported a 13.2% decrease in Profit After Tax (PAT), amounting to 1147 crore rupees in the September quarter of fiscal year 27. This occurred despite an increase in subscription and digital advertising revenues, with gross revenue rising by 9.8% to reach 7944 crore rupees.
In the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year, JioStar reported a PAT of 1322 crore rupees and gross revenue of 7232 crore rupees. According to the earnings report of Reliance Industries Ltd., operating revenue grew by 10.1% year-on-year, reaching 6806 crore rupees.
The company noted that the revenue growth was driven by 'strong growth in subscription revenues and digital entertainment advertising income.' JioStar is a joint venture established after the merger of Reliance Industries' media businesses and the Indian division of the global media and entertainment company Walt Disney.
User Growth and Rebranding
The streaming platform JioHotstar demonstrated a Monthly Active Users (MAUs) count of '440 million during the quarter, representing a 10% year-on-year growth.' During this period, JioHotstar was relaunched and renamed in the international markets of Singapore, the UK, and Canada. The company added that the number of active subscribers in these markets increased by 30% since the launch.
In the September quarter, viewing of entertainment content on JioHotstar exceeded growth by 15%, supported by high figures in both Hindi and regional markets.
Sports Achievements and Monetization
JioStar emphasized that its sports portfolio remained a key element in the September quarter. Major events included international cricket series between England and India, the Wimbledon tournament, the US Open, and the ongoing Premier League season. The England-India series provided high digital viewership, becoming the largest bilateral overseas series on JioHotstar, according to the company.
The Wimbledon 2026, US Open 2026, and initial phase of the Premier League 2026-27 tournaments showed stable viewership alongside enhanced monetization, strengthening JioStar's position in major international sporting events beyond cricket. Furthermore, the company expanded e-commerce integrations beyond cricket, including Wimbledon, US Open, and the Premier League, thereby extending its sports-based monetization strategy across various products.
It was also noted that the company's linear television continues to dominate the market due to the launch of new programs on the Hindi spectrum and JioStar's regional channels.
