IBGE releases new map detailing the division of landforms in Brazil

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has released a new map illustrating the distribution of various landforms across Brazilian territory. This survey, published on Thursday (29th), officially recognizes mountains as one of the main geographical structures of the country.

The study introduced changes to the nomenclature of one landform category and details which regions have the highest concentration of plateaus, plains, and lower altitude areas. Approximately 70 specialists were gathered to produce this work.

The new map segments the national territory into five main landform categories: mountains, plateaus, lowered surfaces, tablelands, and plains. The most extensive category is Lowered Surfaces, covering 47.9% of the country. Plateaus are second, accounting for 37.6% of the total area.

Plains represent 8.4% of the territory, while tablelands account for 2.3%, and mountains occupy 1.9% of the national area.

The distribution of these characteristics varies significantly between regions. In the North and Northeast, for example, lower areas predominate, corresponding to 64.2% and 61.7% of each respective region, in addition to concentrating large expanses of tablelands.

In the Central-West region, plateaus are predominant, covering 63% of the area, and plains represent 13.5%, making it the largest share of this formation among the five Brazilian regions, a fact that can be explained by the presence of the Pantanal.

The South has the highest proportion of plateaus, reaching 77.8% of its area. The Southeast is distinguished by the continuity of mountains, which occupy 10.7% of its territory.

One of the new aspects of the survey is the formal recognition of mountains as an autonomous category in the national classification, present in 20 out of 27 federative units. Minas Gerais leads in the concentration of mountains mapped by the study, with 37.3% of the total area, followed by Bahia (15.8%), Rio de Janeiro (9%), and São Paulo (8.7%).

Another important modification was the replacement of the term 'Depressions' with 'Lowered Surfaces.' This change aims to prevent ambiguities with other concepts of depression, such as craters or sinkholes, and within the context of IBGE, the new term indicates that these areas are at lower positions compared to the surrounding relief.

The map also highlights disparities between states. Amazonas has 28.3% of the mapped plains, followed by Mato Grosso (14.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (14.3%), and Pará (10.4%). Regarding Lowered Surfaces, Amazonas and Pará register the largest extensions, at 29.5% and 14.1%, respectively.

Tablelands are present in 14 federative units, covering all states in the Northeast, but were not found in the Central-West or South. Among them, Pará concentrates 43.8% of the total extent of this formation, and Bahia is second with 13.2%. The work was developed by IBGE in collaboration with the Brazilian Geological Survey (SGB), the Union of Brazilian Geomorphology (UGB), and university researchers.

It is expected that this map will assist in environmental and territorial planning, as well as educational activities, serving as a basis for more in-depth studies on Brazilian relief. The classification is still under development, and IBGE invites the scientific community to contribute its knowledge regarding the presented results. The map and methodological note are available for download on the IBGE Portal.

Google expands AI Mode ads to ten new countries, including Brazil in 2026

Google announced the expansion of ad display in Search's AI Mode to ten new nations, placing Brazil among the markets that will receive this feature by the fourth quarter of 2026. This measure aims to increase the visibility of advertising in searches conducted through artificial intelligence (AI), keeping pace with the transformation in how users search for products and information on the internet.

Shashi Thakur, Vice President and General Manager of Google Search Ads, detailed that queries made in AI Mode tend to be, on average, three times longer than conventional searches. The company argues that this conversational format aids in a deeper understanding of user needs, allowing for the presentation of relevant offers.

Besides Brazil, the expansion schedule covers Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore. Additionally, the company plans to introduce the feature in Mexico and the United Kingdom this quarter.

This expansion coincides with the integration of AI experiences into Google's main search service. Users are no longer solely dependent on short keywords but can now describe scenarios, compare options, and ask sequential questions to refine their searches.

For advertisers, this new pattern of behavior offers the opportunity to display their services and products at more precise points in the buying journey. However, for users themselves, the challenge arises of differentiating advertising recommendations from organic information, even when ads are embedded in an AI-based search experience.

Google assured that it will continue testing different formats to ensure that ads remain relevant and useful. Although the forecast for Brazil is the fourth quarter of 2026, the company did not specify an exact date for the implementation of the feature in the country.

Audi and Adidas launch collection inspired by São Paulo for the Formula 1 Grand Prix

The Audi Revolut F1 Team will change its color palette at the São Paulo GP, abandoning the traditional shades of gray and red. The team, along with its official apparel partner, Adidas, presented the Sampa Soul Collection on Thursday, the 22nd. This new product line is inspired by the rich culture and architecture of the city of São Paulo.

The race, scheduled to take place between November 6th and 8th at the Interlagos circuit, will mark Gabriel Bortoleto's debut for Audi. The Brazilian driver joined Formula 1 this year after acquiring Sauber and achieved victories in both the sprint and main races with the former team in 2025.

A central element of the collection is an abstract print applied to the drivers' shirts and other items. This design alludes to the Paulista pavement, representing the black and white pattern of the capital's sidewalks. This stylized state design was conceived in 1966 by artist Mirthes Bernardes.

The color selection prioritizes forest green, complemented by metallic gold details present in the three Adidas stripes, the four Audi rings, and the logos. The brands explain that these tones symbolize the city where Bortoleto grew up and the support of the Brazilian fans.

Additionally, the official drivers' shirt incorporates two subtle stripes in blue and yellow on the cuffs and collar, as a tribute to the national flag. The polo shirt is made of knitwear, featuring geometric details on the collar and a raised finish that evokes embroidery and crochet techniques.

Gabriel Bortoleto commented on the design, stating that 'the sidewalk design is part of the city, so seeing it on our shirt makes everything very personal, like carrying a piece of home with me.' Bortoleto and his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, participate in the campaign alongside Brazilian actor André Lamoglia, from the Netflix series Elite, in a setting of a São Paulo cafe with a 1970s aesthetic.

The Sampa Soul Collection, which includes jackets, shorts, t-shirts, caps, footwear, and various accessories, will be available for purchase starting this Friday, the 23rd, through the Adidas website, the team's online store, and selected global points of sale.
