Afghan cricketer defeats Zimbabwe in T20 series match

Afghanistan secured a close victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20 series match by a margin of 19 runs, thus ensuring an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. The match, held on October 29th at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, drastically changed its course thanks to the outstanding performance of Ajmatullah Umarji.

Umarji helped Afghanistan recover from a difficult situation by scoring 116 runs off 50 balls, allowing the team to reach a high score. Although Zimbabwe's captain Sikander Raza also scored a century in response, his efforts were insufficient.

After losing the toss, Afghanistan started the game with a very poor start, losing four batsmen in just 3.2 overs, accumulating only 5 runs. Rehmanullah Gurgaz, Mohammed Akrom, and Shahidullah returned without any runs, while captain Ibrahim Jadaran managed to score only one run.

Amidst the continued collapse of the batsmen, Umarji and Ejaz Ahmed Ahmedzai took charge. They formed a partnership of 142 runs for the fifth wicket, putting pressure on the Zimbabwe bowlers. In his century innings, Umarji hit five fours and 12 sixes. He reached his hundred on the 44th ball.

On the other side, Ahmedzai scored 52 runs off 27 balls, including five fours and three sixes. In the final overs, Rashid Khan also actively scored runs, making 25 runs without being dismissed, defending against six balls, four of which were sixes. Thus, Afghanistan managed to build an impressive total of 221 runs in 20 overs, losing seven batsmen.

Chasing a target of 222 runs, Zimbabwe's captain Sikander Raza took responsibility. He scored 106 not out runs off 56 balls, including five fours and nine sixes. Tafadzwa Chigona supported him, scoring 31 not out runs off 23 balls. Opener Brian Bennett added 22 runs, and Innocent Kaiya contributed 25 runs.

Nevertheless, the Zimbabwe team could only manage 202 runs in 20 overs, losing five batsmen, which meant they fell short of the target by 19 runs. From Afghanistan's side, Abdullah Ahmedzai took two wickets, claiming 34 runs. Farid Ahmed, Umarji, and Rashid Khan each took one wicket.

New Zealand Captain Michelle Jenner explains T20 defeat in Wellington due to the difficulty of facing aggressive Indian batsmen

Following the loss in the third T20 match in Wellington against India, New Zealand captain Michelle Jenner admitted that it is extremely difficult to stop such aggressive players as Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

In Wellington, the Indian team reached the target score of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs. Abhishek scored 113 runs off 38 balls, while Vaibhav scored 45 runs off 19 balls. Thanks to this, India won by six wickets and gained an undeniable 3-0 advantage in the five-match series.

Jenner noted that he had seen a similar style of play before, for example, during the Indian Premier League (IPL), and now he was facing it in New Zealand. He emphasized that once these batsmen get into rhythm, it becomes very hard to stop them.

Speaking about his team, Jenner pointed out that losing the coin toss again did not favor the team. Nevertheless, the partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Beban Jackson offered hope of reaching a score around 200. In Jenner's opinion, 200 runs would be a good result on this type of pitch.

He highly praised the performance of the Indian bowlers, noting their brilliant work in the final overs and the effective use of yorkers, which made it difficult for the New Zealand batsmen to score runs. Jenner also acknowledged that bowling after the dew sets in becomes challenging.

According to him, the powerplay is a critical part of this format, and India demonstrated how to play in the first six overs.

Jenner also mentioned positive aspects of his team's play. He stated that various batsmen are capable of turning a good start into a large total. Glenn Phillips performed well in the previous match, and Daryl Mitchell scored runs in the current one.

The captain noted that it is a good sign for the team when the opening batsmen can stay on the field and reach a score of around 80 runs. Increased player confidence will contribute to their presence on the field. However, he admitted that scoring runs against India and defending a large total is not easy.

Jenner revealed that New Zealand used various bowling variations against the Indian batsmen. After observing Axar Patel's play in the first innings, he felt there was no significant advantage for spinners on the pitch, whereas fast bowlers received some assistance from the seam. He added that when the Indian batsmen settle in, the bowlers have to change pace. Initially, Michael Bresshaw was tested against two left-handed batsmen, but the Indian players handled the spin well in that over.

After falling behind 3-0 in the series, the task of a comeback fell to New Zealand. Jenner stated that the team needs to further refine its tactics against Indian batsmen. He mentioned the next venue, Eden Park, noting that the ground there is potentially small on all sides. Under such conditions, stopping India's aggressive play could become even more difficult.

India has gained an undeniable advantage by winning three consecutive matches in the five-match series. The fourth T20 will take place on Friday (October 30th), and New Zealand will try to win this match to start their count in the series.

Ishan Kishan ruled out of India squad due to injury, missing third T20 match

Due to a muscle injury sustained during a game, vice-captain and batsman Ishan Kishan has been dropped from the Indian squad for not only the second but also the third T20 match against New Zealand.

The third match of this five-match series between India and New Zealand is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, at Sky Stadium in Wellington. Fans were expecting Kishan's return as he was in excellent form.

The injury, which is a low-grade adductor strain in his right lower leg, was sustained by Ishan Kishan on October 22 during the first match of the series in Christchurch. The 28-year-old was advised to take a break to prevent further damage. Kumar Kushagra has been included in his place in the team.

Meanwhile, the players are ready for the second match of the series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. India captain Shreyas Iyer decided to start the game with a coin toss and opt for bowling first. The Indian team aims to maintain its winning streak, having achieved an impressive target of 226 runs in the first T20 match.

In the first match, Sandeep Samson delivered an impressive performance, scoring 67 runs off just 33 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer added 42 runs. Following this, young Naman Dheer secured a brilliant victory for the team, scoring 42 runs off only 15 balls without getting out.

Despite Kishan's absence, the Indian team, which currently leads the series 1-0, is fully prepared to continue its winning run. At the same time, the host side, New Zealand, will make every effort to return to the game.

Temba Bavuma sets age record for captain, scoring a century against Australia

South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, demonstrated outstanding play in the Test series match against Australia in Gqeberha. His record innings not only helped the team avoid early difficulties but also allowed him to surpass a significant record set by former Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

Temba Bavuma became the oldest captain in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC) to score a hundred. At the start of the match, Bavuma was 36 years and 154 days old. Previously, this record belonged to Rohit Sharma, who achieved this milestone in 2023 during a Test in Nagpur at the age of 35 years and 285 days.

The intensity of the game was extremely high: Bavuma spent more than nine hours on the field, highlighting his patience and determination. When the match began, South Africa's game was difficult, and the first batsmen fell quickly. However, captain Bavuma held his ground, countering the opposing bowling attacks, and played a brilliant innings of 179 runs off 338 balls.

Thanks to this resilient and brave play, South Africa managed a strong comeback in the match and built up an impressive total. In the first half of the match, Bavuma spent 547 minutes on the field, which is 9 hours and 7 minutes.

Bavuma received excellent support from his teammates: Marco Jansen scored an impressive 85 runs in an aggressive style, and Simon Harmer added 82 runs, demonstrating tactical acumen. Thanks to these big partnerships, South Africa managed to score a huge total of 425 runs in the first innings and declared their innings closed.

In response, the Australian team also faced problems. Star bowler Kagiso Rabada struck the first blow against the Australians early in the innings. As a result, South Africa took a very strong position in this contest.
