Uzbekistan accelerates the launch of the Jartepa free trade zone in Samarkand region

Uzbekistan is taking steps to accelerate the launch of the Jartepa free trade zone, located in the Urgut district of the Samarkand region. As part of these measures, officials are reviewing issues related to border infrastructure, customs procedures, and support measures for exporters.

Deputy Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade Ibrohim Ergashov visited the Samarkand region on October 23–24 to assess the progress of creating the trade zone and hold meetings with business representatives and officials involved in export development.

Discussion of Infrastructure and Customs Control

During the visit, discussions focused on developing logistics and trade infrastructure, organizing customs control, constructing access roads, and simplifying border crossing with neighboring Tajikistan.

Representatives of the Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade of Uzbekistan also held a video conference with officials from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Tajikistan, as well as with the administration of Panjikan. These negotiations concerned the conditions for cross-border trade and the further steps required to start the operation of the Jartepa free trade zone.

Ergashov participated in an open dialogue with more than 50 exporters from the Samarkand region. Participants reviewed over 30 requests and problems related to logistics, customs operations, access to financing, and product certification. Some of these issues were resolved directly during the meeting.

Following the visit, responsible officials, implementation timelines, and specific measures aimed at accelerating the launch of the free trade zone, eliminating obstacles for businesses, and supporting export activities were determined.

Uzbekistan and Iran Discuss Expansion of Trade Cooperation and Transport Links

Uzbekistan and Iran held discussions aimed at expanding economic and trade interaction, strengthening investment ties, and seeking alternative transportation routes, according to the Uzbek news agency Dunyo.

The issues were discussed during a meeting between Uzbekistan's ambassador Fariddin Nasriev and Bahman Abdollahi, chairman of the Iranian Chamber of Cooperatives. The parties reviewed opportunities to increase bilateral trade, promote investment partnership between enterprises, and exchange professional experience.

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan Simplify Financing for Joint Projects and Improve Business Conditions

Uzbekistan and Tajikistan intend to simplify the financing process for joint investment projects and create more favorable conditions for enterprises wishing to acquire production equipment.

Amendments to the agreement between the governments of the two countries were approved by the lower house of the Tajik parliament on October 1. These changes concern the use of foreign currency, the import of technological equipment, and the provision of financial support to entrepreneurs.

The updated mechanisms are expected to reduce companies' operating costs when equipping production facilities. One such measure is leasing, which will allow companies to obtain necessary equipment without having to pay the full cost immediately. Furthermore, more favorable customs and tax conditions are provided for the import of technological equipment.

As of October 1, 2026, the Tajik-Uzbek investment company approved seven projects totaling $20.9 million USD, of which $8.9 million has already been allocated for implementation. These projects cover various economic sectors, including industrial production, agricultural raw material processing, food production, and medical services. The completion of these projects is expected to create over 720 jobs.

The bilateral investment company was established in 2021 to support entrepreneurship, finance joint initiatives, and develop the production sector. Its initial capital was $12 million USD. The Uzbekistan Recovery and Development Fund provided 75% of the capital, while the state company Tajinvest of Tajikistan contributed the remaining 25%.

In July 2026, Tajikistan's Minister of Finance Faiziddin Qahhorzoda announced that the company's capital exceeded $50 million USD. The company has the ability to finance projects, acquire stakes in existing or new enterprises, and attract funds from international financial institutions.

Agreements on changing the company's operational terms were formalized by a protocol signed on March 26, 2026, during the visit of Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon to Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan completed the necessary internal procedures on September 9.
