Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz appeared composed during the press conference for his first Soweto derby. He was seen in a black and white suit with a black and gold striped tie at SuperSport Studios in Randburg on Thursday afternoon, stating that he knows what is expected of the team.
His confidence was justified as the team was in high spirits following their 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday. This win secured their place in the Karling Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Siwelele next month.
Prior to this fixture, the club's sporting director, Kaizer Mothunga Jr., also offered strong support to the coach, publishing a statement defending him and the technical team after a recent difficult spell that included elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers.
All these factors were expected to boost the Chiefs' morale ahead of the country's biggest sporting event. Da Cruz demonstrated calm self-assurance in his opening remarks to the media in English, rather than his native Portuguese, which previously required fitness trainer Julien Le Heran to act as an interpreter.
Da Cruz emphasized the significance of the match, stating: 'This is the most important game in the South African football calendar. I think it is one of the biggest games on the continent. It divides the country. I believe it will be a good spectacle.'
He added: 'I am fine. We have worked well with the team this week. We are confident. But we know it will be a tough game against a good, big team. I would like to congratulate Abdes (Waddu, Orlando Pirates coach) on his good work since his arrival, but I think we are ready to play this match.'
Waddu acknowledged that his team enters the derby as favorites due to their recent form across all tournaments and the fact that they have not lost a derby since securing wins and draws in the league last season. Nevertheless, if Da Cruz's composure, self-assurance, and confidence set the tone, the Pirates' character may be tested at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon (15:30).
