Olivia Dean's Debut in South Africa: Tickets for Milk + Cookies Festival Spark Debates Over Affordability

Excitement is building ahead of Olivia Dean's first performance in South Africa. However, the rush to secure tickets for the Milk + Cookies Festival 2027 has also sparked a discussion regarding the event's price accessibility.

On Wednesday, October 28th, the pre-sale for festival tickets began. Fans monitored screens, awaiting the opportunity to purchase spots in the online queue for one of next year's highly anticipated music events.

For some fans, obtaining a ticket was the priority, while others questioned whether the festival experience itself justified such a cost.

Access to the pre-sale was granted to fans who registered via Olivia Dean's official link, provided by Laylo. Registration was also possible through the Milk + Cookies Festival website for early access.

Nevertheless, registration did not guarantee a ticket. The number of tickets available for the pre-sale was limited and sold on a 'first come, first served' basis, leading to disappointment among some fans who waited in line but could not get the desired tickets.

This frenzy highlights the high interest in Dean's upcoming performances, as South African fans prepare to see the British singer-songwriter whose music has gained international recognition.

Although the high demand for tickets reflects the anticipation of Dean's appearance, the price range has divided the audience. General admission tickets range from R1,250 to R2,250; some concertgoers question the acceptability of this price, while others believe the experience justifies the expense.

For those hoping to attend, the costs are not limited to just the ticket price. Transportation, accommodation for those traveling from other cities, and other expenses related to the festival day can significantly increase the total amount.

Organizers also offered installment payment options, giving guests a chance to spread out the costs instead of making a single lump-sum payment. However, the availability of payment plans does not make the event accessible to everyone, especially for fans who already have other financial obligations.

The performances will take place in Cape Town on Friday, January 29, 2027, at Sandringham Farm, and in Johannesburg on Sunday, January 31, 2027, at Nasrec Expo Centre. Dean will headline the third South African edition of the Milk + Cookies Festival. Previous headliners included Canadian DJ and producer Kaytranada in 2025 and American rapper Gunna in 2026.

The 2027 lineup also features South African artists Elaine, Zee Nxumalo, Chelsea Sloan, and Jade T, with announcements expected regarding additional performers and program details.

The festival combines live music with elements of food culture, fashion, art, and design, as well as creative activations, workshops, and pop-up shops.

Fans who were unable to purchase tickets during the pre-sale on Wednesday still have another chance. General ticket sales will open on Friday, October 30th, through the Howler platform for both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Given the demand already demonstrated during the pre-sale, fans wishing to attend should be prepared for the general sale opening. Nevertheless, availability will depend on the remaining number of tickets.

Information about tickets and the event itself is available on the official Milk + Cookies Festival website. For fans who have long awaited Dean's live performance in South Africa, the countdown to January has officially begun. Now it remains to see if they can manage to purchase a ticket before the remaining stock sells out.

Olivia Dean to headline Milk + Cookies Festival in South Africa in 2027

The Grammy and multiple BRIT Awards-winning singer Olivia Dean will headline the third edition of the Milk + Cookies Festival in South Africa.

According to the announcement, Dean will perform at Sandringham Farm in Cape Town on January 29, 2027, before moving to the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg on January 31.

Her appearance complements the previously announced lineup, which includes Elaine, Zee Nxumalo, Chelsea Sloan, and Jade T.

This announcement followed fan speculation regarding the festival's headliner, after which organizers confirmed that Dean is the latest international star to join the event.

Dean's selection aligns with the Milk + Cookies Festival's approach of attracting artists from various musical genres to South African audiences. The festival first took place in a local format in 2025 with electronic producer Kaytranada, who performed for an audience of 20,000 people. In 2026, American rapper Gunna was the headliner.

Bringing Dean, known for her soul sound, to the main role in 2027 once again demonstrates the diversity of the festival's musical direction. According to Chase Freeman, Marketing Director of Milk + Cookies, there was initially no intention of building the lineup around any single genre.

Freeman noted: 'People constantly ask how Kaytranada, Gunna, and Olivia Dean can end up on the same bill.' He added: 'Never the same sound, always the same feeling. That was the only brief we had. We book for the people in the room, not for the genre, and they come for the feeling the venue creates, just as much as for the name on the poster.'

Freeman also shared that the South African versions of the festival have influenced the brand's approach to events in other markets. He emphasized: 'In three years, South Africa has given us. We came here to put on a show, but ended up building something together with the people who live here, and that changed our approach everywhere.'

In addition to the main performances, the Milk + Cookies Festival integrates elements of culinary arts, fashion, art, and design into its program. Panel discussions, workshops, pop-up shops, and parties are planned to run parallel to the main festival stages.

Organizers point out that local South African artists, creatives, venues, and partners play a vital role in shaping the experience in each city. Additional performers and details about the broader program are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Dean's addition to the lineup allows the festival to continue experimenting with a roster that unites diverse sounds and audiences for its third edition in South Africa.
