Liverpool beat Chelsea in League Cup penalty shootout; Manchester City avoided trouble

Liverpool defeated Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout, advancing to the League Cup quarter-finals. Meanwhile, reigning champion Manchester City managed to overcome difficulties by playing Brighton on Wednesday.

In the match between former teammates Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso, the Liverpool manager gained an advantage in the Round of 16 game at Anfield stadium. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time, leading to a penalty shootout. Morgan Rogers' goal for Chelsea from the penalty spot was equalized by Cody Gakpo with his own penalty shortly before halftime.

During the penalty shootout, Valentin Barco shot wide of the post, and Kostas Tsimikas missed a chance to win by shooting over the bar. Ryan Gravenberch was stopped by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Pender, but Georgi Mamardashvili prevented a goal by Emmanuel Emegi.

After Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool, Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana made an inaccurate pass to 'The Kop', allowing the home team to advance further. For Alonso, this marked his third defeat in three visits to Anfield as a coach, following losses to Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 and Real Madrid in 2025.

In their debut campaigns at Liverpool, both Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot reached the League Cup final, and Iraola is following in their footsteps among the ten-time winners of this tournament.

Iraola stated: 'We are very happy. Three consecutive home wins are very important. We had difficulties at home in the league, but now we are playing against Arsenal on Sunday.' He noted that in the eighth match he will face his former club Bournemouth.

Alonso added: 'Every time you reach penalties, someone feels that elimination from the competition was unfair.' He also emphasized: 'We showed a good level, and that is what is needed to get to these stadiums. The Premier League is the main priority.'

Alonso made only four substitutions in the Chelsea squad, which lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday, whereas Iraola made seven substitutions in Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Brighton on Sunday.

Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Gravenberch clashed with Moisés Caicedo. However, Liverpool equalized within three minutes with their own penalty when Gakpo capitalized on Fofana's foul.

At the Etihad stadium, City was pushed to the limit by Brighton in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw before they won in a penalty shootout. City coach Enzo Maresca made nine substitutions after the loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, which interrupted the leaders' perfect start in the Premier League.

Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea lead Sunday's Premier League results surge

Manchester City topped the Premier League after defeating Ipswich 3-2, with Erling Haaland scoring two goals. On the same Sunday, Liverpool managed to bounce back and won against Brentford 2-1.

Despite an impressive start to the season, Manchester City has faced serious off-field problems, as the club was found to have violated over 100 Premier League financial regulations. Nevertheless, the team showed an ideal start on the pitch, winning seven consecutive matches, which is the best start in the club's history.

City, which disputes the finding, calling it a 'Premier League conspiracy,' leads champions Arsenal by six points. Arsenal has a chance to close the gap by beating Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

If City's appeal fails, the club could face a large point deduction or even relegation from the top division, casting doubt on the significance of their results by the end of the season. However, for now, Enzo Maresca's team is in good form following the loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium was charged: City fans began whistling before the match, and thousands waved inflatable bananas, demonstrating their commitment to the club despite current difficulties. These novelty bananas first appeared at matches supporting the team in the late 1980s when it was struggling.

City fans jokingly cheered their opponents from Ipswich with the song 'you're down with the City.' Phil Foden opened the scoring for Maresca's team in the 19th minute after a sharp turn and attack concluded, provoked by a penetrating play from Jeremy Dukou, who broke through the Ipswich defense. Foden's first goal of the season was scored, after which Ipswich equalized in the 21st minute when Daisen Maeda bypassed Marc Guehi and sent the ball into the net.

Haaland restored City's advantage in the 34th minute, heading home a precise pass from Mateo Kovacic. In the 69th minute, Haaland finished the attack against Ipswich, accelerating onto a pass from Iliman Ndiaye and shooting past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton. This was the Norwegian striker's twelfth goal in his last eight matches for City.

A penalty by Jayn Fleming in the 90th minute, awarded for a foul by Guehi, created a tense finish, but City managed to hold onto their lead.
