US Federal Reserve keeps interest rates unchanged, awaiting new inflation data

The US Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates at 3.75–4.00% following a vote of 10 to 2. This decision was made against a backdrop of persistent inflation, although two committee members advocated for a 25 basis point rate hike before the midterm elections.

The US central bank confirmed that it will maintain its benchmark interest rate in the current range of 3.75%–4.00%, while acknowledging that inflation 'remains elevated.' Furthermore, it raised its economic outlook and hinted at the possibility of further rate increases depending on inflation dynamics.

In the latest statement from the Federal Open Market Committee, which is responsible for setting rates, it was stated: 'Accumulation of additional information will help the Committee determine a policy stance consistent with the timely return of inflation to the 2% target.' The Committee also affirmed its commitment to maintaining price stability.

Fed Governor Lisa Cook, whom President Donald Trump is considering for removal from the central bank, voted against the decision, supporting a quarter-point rate increase. Similarly, Fed President Cliffberna Beth Hammack, known for her tough stance, also voted against the decision in July for the same reason.

The latest Fed statement differs from the meeting held on September 15–16 because it contains a hint of forward guidance, which Fed Chair Kevin Warsh seeks to avoid.

Additionally, the economic outlook was improved from 'stable' to 'strong' growth compared to the September meeting, with investments continuing to show confidence and employment growth matching the labor force size.

Inflation Expansion Risks

The outcome of the current meeting was widely anticipated after high-ranking Fed officials signaled no rush to raise rates again after the quarter-point increase approved last month. This occurred despite stronger-than-expected inflation data and concerns that price pressures are spreading throughout the economy.

Energy costs remain high, including diesel fuel, which is a key raw material for shipping, agriculture, and other industries. Inflation and the cost of living have become central themes in the political races that will determine whether Trump's Republican party retains control of both houses of Congress on November 3rd, or if Democrats take leadership positions and gain stronger oversight powers, including over the Fed.

Kevin Warsh will hold a press conference at 2:30 PM EDT (18:30 GMT) to elaborate on the decision and economic forecasts. Investors expect that reducing inflation, which currently exceeds the Fed's target by about one percentage point and has shown minimal progress in recent months, will require further rate hikes starting in December and continuing through 2027.

The US central bank has not met its inflation target for five and a half years, causing concern among some officials regarding the possibility that businesses and households are becoming accustomed to faster price increases and may plan their actions in a way that makes inflation control more difficult.
