New expressway between Delhi and Haridwar will reduce travel time to an hour and a half

Those planning a trip from Delhi to Haridwar can soon significantly simplify their journey. The route, which currently takes three to four hours, will soon take only an hour and a half. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the reduction in travel time between Delhi and Haridwar.

He stated that the new expressway connecting Delhi and Haridwar will be ready within the next two months, which will substantially decrease the arrival time from Delhi to Haridwar.

Previously, after the opening of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway, the travel time between these cities was reduced. If the trip from Delhi to Dehradun used to take about five to six hours, it now takes approximately two hours. This has created expectations among Delhi residents traveling to Haridwar regarding improved transport accessibility on this route, which is now confirmed by Nitin Gadkari's statements.

The reduction in travel time to an hour and a half will bring significant benefits to tourists, pilgrims, and those planning weekend trips. Residents of Delhi-NCR will be able to leave for Haridwar early in the morning to take a ritual dip in the Ganges and easily plan the return trip on the same day. This, in turn, may lead to an increase in visitors to Haridwar and neighboring tourist spots.

Addressing the National CII conference on 'The Future of India,' Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the critical importance of strong infrastructure for the economic development of any country. He noted that improving road conditions and building expressways promotes agriculture, industry, trade, and business. This facilitates the transportation of goods and reduces delivery times.

The minister also stated that the new expressway linking Delhi and Haridwar within two months will reduce the travel time to an hour and a half. He mentioned that logistics costs in India have decreased from the previous 16% to below 9%. According to Gadkari, developing basic infrastructure is the key and most important factor for the country's future development, as it allows for the development of agriculture, productivity, industry, trade, and business.

Gadkari compared the situation with logistics costs: about two years ago, the issue of logistics was discussed. In China, logistics costs were around 8% of GDP, whereas in India they reached 16%, creating serious obstacles for the Indian economy in international trade. However, he expressed happiness by reporting that India's logistics costs have dropped from 16% to a single-digit figure of 9%, which is lower than the figures for China (8%) and the USA (12%).

Examples of improved transport accessibility include reducing the travel time from Delhi to Meerut from three and a half hours to 45-50 minutes, and from Delhi to Jaipur from five hours to two hours. Furthermore, it is expected that the road journey between Bangalore and Chennai, which previously took four to five hours, will now take about two hours. This leads to a reduction in logistics costs and stimulates tourism and development.

In conclusion, Nitin Gadkari announced plans to develop 36 green expressways, which will bring radical changes to the landscape of development and the country's transport system. Work is underway for road infrastructure projects in Delhi worth about 1,60,000 crore rupees. He also noted that 49% of capital expenditure in tourism will contribute to job creation. An example of such a project is the Char Dham initiative, which costs approximately 12,000 crore rupees, and 85% of the work on it is complete. Thanks to this, the number of tourists traveling from Delhi to Badrinath and Kedarnath has tripled compared to previous years.

Cyclone Arnab moves northwest after making landfall; possible connection with Lucknow and Gorakhpur

The powerful tropical cyclone Arnab has reached the coast of Andhra Pradesh. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on the morning of October 28, 2026, the storm's center was located in the West Central Bay of Bengal, near the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Its center was situated 30 kilometers east of Narsapur, 45 kilometers southwest of Yanam, and 70 kilometers southwest of Kakinada.

Subsequently, the cyclone will move in a northwest direction, crossing the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Wind speeds are expected to be 115–125 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 140 kilometers per hour. After making landfall, Arnab will begin to weaken.

According to the IMD map, the storm will track from the northwest to the north. It will first pass through the coastal and inland areas of Andhra Pradesh, then move into Telangana and Chhattisgarh. After that, it will cross parts of Madhya Pradesh and head towards Uttar Pradesh, gradually weakening along the way. The storm is expected to transform from a powerful tropical cyclone into a strong tropical cyclone, then a tropical cyclone, a deep depression, and finally a depression or low-pressure area.

The storm's trajectory indicates that remnants of the cyclone may reach Uttar Pradesh. It could weaken in areas near Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Gorakhpur. Around October 30, it might turn into a designated low-pressure area with wind speeds of 27–30 km/h and dissipate in the eastern or central part of UP.

Furthermore, according to IMD data from October 27, 2026, the very strong cyclonic storm 'Arnab' was moving west-northwest at a speed of 18 km/h. At 09:00 UTC on the same day, it was in the same region, near latitude 16.2°N and longitude 83.3°E, approximately 140 km southeast of Kakinada. It is forecast to continue moving almost west-northwest for the next few hours, and then northwest, crossing the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very strong cyclonic storm with sustained winds of 125–135 km/h and gusts up to 150 km/h by 06:00 UTC on October 28, 2026. The system is under constant observation by Doppler weather radar in Visakhapatnam and Machilipatnam.

Due to this, a warning for heavy rainfall and strong winds has been issued for eastern Uttar Pradesh. Areas such as Gorakhpur, Dewaria, Basti, and Kushinagar are expected to be affected. Typically, cyclones weaken after making landfall due to friction with dry land air.

Arnab's northwest movement is attributed to seasonal winds and pressure systems. Many cyclones forming in the Bay of Bengal follow similar paths, moving across Central India northward. This leads to rainfall in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

In the coastal areas where landfall occurred, strong winds and waves will persist. In inland areas, heavy rains may lead to rising river levels. Thunderstorms are possible in Uttar Pradesh from October 28 to 30. Farmers should take measures to protect their crops, and administrations must remain vigilant in low-lying areas. This forecast is based on IMD data and satellite imagery, and the situation may change, so it is recommended to monitor official updates. Arnab's journey will start on the coast of Andhra Pradesh and end on the plains of North India, where it will take the form of rain.
