Rio Negro in Manaus drops 2 meters in 25 days, reaching a level lower than in 2025

The water level of the Rio Negro in Manaus registered a drop of 2.74 meters compared to the same period in 2025, amid the drought affecting the Amazon region. On Tuesday (27), the river reached the mark of 16.59 meters, while last year the recorded level was 19.33 meters.

Data collected by the monitoring of the Port of Manaus confirms that the receding water continues in the Amazonian capital. Specifically, between October 2 and 27 of this year, the river level decreased by 2 meters, dropping from 18.59 to 16.59 meters.

Despite the drop, the intensity of the current recession was less compared to the 2025 period. Last year, the river level had receded by 3.11 meters between October 2 and 27, resulting in a reduction of the difference between the levels of the two years throughout the month.

As of Tuesday (27), 46 municipalities in Amazonas were under a state of emergency due to the combination of river drought and forest fire outbreaks. According to a bulletin issued by the Civil Defense last Saturday (24), a total of 113.9 thousand families were impacted in the state.

Projection for the drought

According to the responsible body, the Negro and White River basins represent the scenario of greatest concern in the Amazon. Monitoring indicates that low river levels, combined with rainfall deficit and unfavorable climate forecasts, require constant vigilance during this dry period.

For the Amazon, Solimões, and Tapajós rivers, the expectation is that the recession will follow its historical pattern, although there is a possibility of prolongation if the return of rains is delayed.
