A video captures a leopard calmly moving through the streets of Uruasu, a city located in the northern part of the state of Goiás. Surveillance camera footage shows the animal walking on the road and approaching the gates of one of the houses. It is presumed to be a suçarana, also known as a spotted leopard, but the species has not yet been confirmed.
In another video, filmed by a driver from a vehicle, the animal is seen moving along the street. The appearance of the leopard attracted the attention of local residents, who called emergency services.
A team was dispatched to the area where the animal was sighted and conducted a search, but failed to locate it. There is a suggestion that the leopard may have returned to the forest area, but this has not been confirmed.
What explains the leopard's presence in the city?
According to biologist Edson Abrau, the animal might have approached the urban area in search of water and shelter. Another possible reason is escape from forest fires in the region. Nevertheless, the specialist emphasized that determining the exact cause is impossible.
The biologist explained that riparian forests, vegetation zones located near rivers, function as natural ecological corridors, facilitating the movement of wild animals. According to the specialist, Uruasu is located in the Tocantins River basin, a region that features vegetation zones used by fauna for movement.
