Video of bishops praying with Donald Trump sparks controversy in the US

A recent meeting between several archbishops and Catholic bishops from North America and U.S. President Donald Trump took place in the Oval Office of the White House last Thursday, October 22. Following the publication of video footage from this meeting, which shows the bishops praying alongside the Republican, a debate arose, and apologies have already been issued.

The video began to cause controversy because it appeared shortly before the midterm elections in North America, which could create an impression of support from the Catholic Church.

On Sunday, one of the attending archbishops, Jeffrey Grobe, publicly apologized for what happened, accusing the Trump administration of using the meeting for political purposes. In his statement titled 'Public Apology,' Grobe asserted that the White House distributed photos and videos of the Thursday meeting without the consent of the attending archbishops and bishops.

He stated: 'I feel deep sorrow, not only for the pain I caused, but also because such a practice sacred to a group of religious leaders, the prayer for our Heavenly Father, was manipulated in this way.' He added: 'We came with good intentions to work for the good of our neighbors, alleviate suffering, build common good, and pray with the president, not to pose for a political photo for the benefit of a few.'

Jeffrey Grobe also emphasized that the meeting with Donald Trump 'in no way represented support for the president, his policies, or his party.' He noted that he viewed the meeting as an opportunity to 'discuss important issues for the Church and for the people, including the application of immigration law, visas for religious workers, and human dignity.'

The archbishop reported that he was told the meeting would be a private conversation attended by various Catholic members and that there would be an opportunity to pray personally with the president. He continued that he carefully considered whether or not to participate. 'Ultimately, I felt that if I had the opportunity to express my opinion to improve the lives of God's children, I should take it. I pray daily for our elected representatives; I felt it was appropriate to do so in person.'

He also revealed that after a 90-minute meeting, the archbishops and bishops were escorted into the Oval Office of the White House, where they were instructed to stand behind the president and pray. 'Several photos were taken afterward, and we were asked to leave. A video recording was also made without the knowledge of the group,' he said, adding that 'permission for the distribution or publication of the video or photos was not given.'

After the video was released, Jeffrey Grobe reported that he began receiving messages from people who 'felt hurt due to the damage they or their families suffered because of the president's policies.'

Archbishop James Golka also commented on the meeting in an interview with the Denver Catholic newspaper, acknowledging concerns about the political implications of the video. Nevertheless, he stressed that praying for elected officials remains a long-standing Catholic practice. He noted: 'I didn't entirely know what to do. On one hand, it was a great opportunity to raise important issues for the good of the church. On the other hand, I knew people might be upset. Although I thought it would be a private meeting, I also knew it could be shared, and some might use it for political purposes.'

White House defends Donald Trump

For his part, White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers defended Donald Trump's record on religious freedom and the priorities of the Catholic Church in statements to Fox News Digital. He stated: 'There has never been a better president for American Catholics than President Trump, and his strong track record proves it: he prevented the federal government from being instrumentalized against Christians, proudly defended and expanded our religious rights, granted clemency to human rights activists for life, stopped the chemical torture of children in our country, and protected parental rights.'

São Judas Tadeu Parish in Uberlândia becomes Diocesan Sanctuary

The São Judas Tadeu Parish Church, located in the Roosevelt neighborhood of Uberlândia, will be elevated to the status of Diocesan Sanctuary this Tuesday, the 27th, the eve of the saint's day. This change formalizes the recognition of the importance of devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus in the city and inaugurates a new phase in the trajectory of the local Catholic community.

The solemnity is scheduled for 7 p.m., including a mass and the dedication rite of both the church and the altar. The ceremony will be led by the diocesan bishop, Dom Paulo Francisco Machado, and will feature the participation of priests and deacons. The event will be live-streamed via YouTube.

Saint Jude Thaddeus is known by Catholic faithful as the saint of impossible causes and the afflicted, and he is also one of the twelve apostles and cousin of Jesus. His day is celebrated annually on October 28th.

From Community to Sanctuary in 38 Years

The São Judas Tadeu Community had been established as a parish on March 20, 1988, a decision made by Dom Estêvão Cardoso de Avellar. Now, this Tuesday (27), the São Judas Tadeu Parish Church, located in the Roosevelt neighborhood of Uberlândia, assumes the status of Diocesan Sanctuary.

There is a distinction between a parish and a sanctuary: while a parish is structured to provide pastoral assistance to a specific community of faithful in a defined area, a sanctuary is a place that gains recognition due to its religious importance and also serves to receive pilgrims. This elevation symbolizes the recognition of the tradition of faith and devotion to Saint Jude Thaddeus in the city, promoting an environment where spirituality and the practice of faith are encouraged.

Pope Leo XIV to Meet Sexual Abuse Victims in South America in November During Visit

The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV will hold meetings with victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church during his trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, scheduled from November 6 to 17. In a statement, the Vatican press office noted that these meetings reflect the Pope's desire to express his closeness to all who have been affected by and continue to suffer from this violence.

The itinerary includes Uruguay from November 6 to 8, followed by Argentina from November 8 to 11, and concludes in Peru before November 17. According to Holy See information, in Peru, the Pope intends to compensate victims of actions by a Catholic movement based in the country.

Previously, the predecessor of the current Pope, Pope Francis, ordered the dissolution of the ultra-conservative movement Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV) in Peru after systematic cases of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse by some of its leaders were uncovered.

Peru is a country where Pope Leo XIV spent a significant part of his life; he first visited it as a missionary in the 1980s and served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. The current Pope, who holds Peruvian citizenship, has repeatedly advocated for the Church's duty to provide justice and compensation to victims of violence, as well as to work on crime prevention.

Despite the South American trip taking place a month after his operation to remove a lung tumor, it is motivated by Pope Leo XIV's desire to 'create paths to healing together with victims of sexual abuse, accessible to anyone in need,' as stated in the Vatican message. The statement also emphasizes that the Pope's visits to these South American countries will proceed according to plan and are aimed at ensuring that the Church remains a safe and spiritually healthy place that lives and preaches the Gospel.

During his trip to France in October, Pope Leo XIV met with various victims of sexual abuse committed by French clergy and acknowledged that some organizations within the Catholic Church 'sometimes committed systemic violence.' Furthermore, in June, during his visit to Spain, where he also met with victims of sexual abuse, the Pope promised 'additional efforts' and a 'more effective response' to this crime within the Church.
