Brian Lara advised Temba Bavuma before the decisive match in Newlands

Brian Lara highly praised Temba Bavuma's performance, noting his 179 runs in the second Test against Australia at St George's Park as one of the great innings of this era, but he strongly urged the Proteas captain to complete the current task.

Since the series was tied (1-1) before the final match in Cape Town, the West Indies icon decided to postpone his praise until preparations for the decisive encounter, so that his congratulations would be accompanied by a call to maintain momentum.

Lara shared on Instagram: 'I know I am a little late congratulating my good friend Temba Bavuma and the Proteas, but there is a reason for this delay.' He continued: 'Temba's magnificent 179 runs, in my opinion, are one of the great Test innings of this era. The ability to perform such a game under pressure when your team needs you the most says a lot about a person and a captain.'

Although he acknowledged the brilliant performance in Gqeberha, Lara emphasized that true sporting character is shown in supporting an outstanding result when everything is at stake.

Lara wrote: 'Congratulations, Temba and South Africa. Enjoy the moment because the next challenge awaits, and that is why I waited to share my thoughts.' He added that while success deserves celebration, at the moment of achieving a goal, the focus must be on maintaining that momentum. In sports, one cannot become a prisoner of what has just been achieved; one must learn lessons, draw confidence, and prepare to do it all again.

The venue of the final holds poetic significance for the Proteas captain. Newlands is where Bavuma first made his mark on the international stage, scoring a landmark debut century in 2016, and now he returns to the foot of Table Mountain with the aim of winning the series.

For Lara, the balance between celebration and relentless striving remains a hallmark of the best athletes: 'That is the challenge of greatness: not just reaching the top, but finding the hunger and discipline to stay there.'
